We had the good fortune of connecting with Dina Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dina, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Because Earth without ART is just Eh… All jokes aside what is life without the things that make us deeply feel. Whether it’s sorrrow or absolute bliss. Life’s about the feels. Anything fulfilling makes you think and feel something. Being a creative who’s responsible for a feeling is the most euphoric experience. In a world so desensitized, comedy to me is the last art form that bridges that gap of the highs and lows of life so beautifully. There’s some thing amazingly vulnerable in being able to tell a personal experience in a way that complete strangers can relate to it. Miami’s got the toughest audiences to crack and the challenge really makes me love it that much more.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from the crowd is definitely my diverse personality. I can do an all Spanglish set and turn right around and host a room for out of town hedge fund managers in brickell. I’ve done comedy clubs and I’ve done a show on the sidewalk in downtown Miami. It’s all part of this game. Funny is subjective. People laugh at what they identify with and understand. Being that token “ friend” that isn’t scared to say what we’re all thinking and the one who says what no one thought of but makes all the sense is honestly my favorite kind of balance. If you’re a true comedian your message should be universal. Laughter isn’t prejudice and doesn’t discriminate. People should feel like they connected with you after a show. Because they did! Even if it was for just a moment. I got to where I am today with a whole lot of hard work. Everyone thinks of comedians and it’s like “ok clown make me laugh” and I can say that cause I used to be one of them. But actually picking up a mic makes you realize the science behind it and all the skill it takes to be unfiltered, vulnerable, sincere and hilarious all at once. To be honest, and not make others uncomfortable. But instead to welcome strangers into your weird little world and show them hey I think like that too sometimes. To acknowledge trauma and growth in the same sentence. Comedy is definitely not easy especially in this city. Overcoming the common “women aren’t funny” stigma is still a “thing” but the biggest challenge has been myself. Like any creative the doubt looms in from time to time but then I usually run into a fan who says I made them smile and that makes all the late nights worth it all. I want people to know this isn’t another online personality or an influencer who’s posting for likes.. It’s really is me. All my jokes come from real life experiences. I used to be the person who never understood why certain things would happen and in learning to find the laughter in the lessons I found a way to share my story with the world. Authentically and unapologetic. The lesson there is when gave up trying to fit a mold of what I should be, the world smiled back. And I’ve been smiling ever since.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well if we’re taking comedy vibes, Monday starts off at RedBar in brickell
On Tuesday it’s usually Dom’s in Brickell for good food and good laughs.
Wednesday I’m always at DC Pie in Downtown Doral. Where I host a show of all the funniest comedians in So Fl. It’s always a different line up but also always laid back and so much fun. Thursday would be a night off for me so I’d definitely want to catch dinner at new restaurant. Miami has a million choose from. Friday I would head to Thank you Miami in little Havana.Fun fact I actually built most of my my material at this venue’s open mic. So it always feels like home. I swear Super Nintendo and Jenga have nothing to do with it. Saturdays I’m usually at Limonda on south beach there’s always a great showcase of talent out on the patio and their signature cocktails are amazing. Sunday I usually start off at Julia and Henry’s in downtown for a quick bite and head on over to Tipsy Flamingo to work some new jokes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Specifically my fellow comedian Cisco Duran who saw my potential and introduced me to the one thing that’s brought so much joy in life. The Miami Comedy brand and it’s founder Manny Garavito for building a solid scene in this city way before anyone thought people in flip flops and consistent tropical weather could be funny. Especially all the other Miami comedians who welcomed me in these trenches with no second thoughts. I’m proud of comedy in this city. It really is like a little family of extremely talented writers, artists, actors, and just raw talent. And we really are all rooting for each other. That’s something cities with a bigger scene can’t really say for themselves.
