We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Baby Van Beezly Aka Vanessa Resler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Baby Van Beezly, how do you think about risk?
My whole career has been built on risk taking! I’ve made a lot of decisions that didn’t look great on paper, but have only had the most rewarding of outcomes. When I got my master’s degree in tax preparation and took a job in a top 4 accounting firm the “good on paper” decision would be to stay there for the rest of my life until I made partner, and in turn, a shitload of money. But I was MISERABLE. And I wasn’t able to enjoy any of that money because all I did was work. At 26 years old I decided to quit my CPA job and start an entirely new career as a DJ (the modern day equivalent of running off with the circus haha). At first I kept two jobs to keep things afloat. Then I had a baby in 2016 which made me think I needed to be more “practical” for about a minute until the passion to rock dance floors pulled me back in. With a 2 year old daughter I decided to risk it all and make DJing my full time thing. 5 years later I am one of Seattle’s most sought after club and private event DJs, earning enough to support two children, a wiener dog, and a home mortgage. I look forward to showing up for work every single day and I have zero regrets. I’m my own boss, I own my schedule, and I have SO MUCH FUN doing it!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional DJ. I’m known as the hardest working DJ in Seattle! I play at least 5 gigs per week (but often more), and when I’m not rocking a dance floor I’m practicing in my studio, handling the administrative side of my business, or being a bad ass mom to my 2 little kiddos, Betty and Freddie. What sets me apart from other DJs is that I play extremely high energy sets and I am in the booth hyping my music harder than anyone in the room! I try to make my good party vibes a contagious feeling that everyone on the dance floor catches on to. What I am most proud of is that I have built my DJ brand up so large that I am living comfortably in one of the most expensive cities in the US and supporting a family, all from being my own boss and doing something that I truly love with my whole heart. It wasn’t always easy, I had to work two jobs for many years before I could live full time off of DJing, but I overcame the challenges by remaining authentic to who I am and trusting that the parties I want to play will come my way if I keep putting my real self out there. I DJ in Seattle’s most popular drag bar (Queer/Bar) and I get to work with amazingly talented artists and entertainers every week (including celebrity drag queens from RuPaul’s drag race!) It really doesn’t get any better than that! The main lesson I’ve learned along the way is to listen to my gut always, and never ignore my instincts to run away from a bad deal. What I want the world to know about my story is that everything took off for me when I quit my “practical” job as a CPA to become a DJ – it was the most rewarding risk I have ever taken in my life and I get to live each day fulfilled by my passion to make people sweat it out on the dance floor!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Seattle! If I had friends in town I would first take them to all the parties I DJ haha. We would start at Drag Brunch at Julia’s in Wallingford presented by one of my favorite promoters in the city, Isaiah Lujan. Then we would go to my residence Queer/Bar and catch the MX Drag Show followed by one of my dance parties! I would also take friends to one of the raddest night clubs I’ve ever seen – Supernova! The DJ booth is a giant disco ball! As far as eating goes, I’m a vegan so I would take friends to Cafe Flora for dinner and Dough Joy donuts for dessert!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my mentor, DJ Shortee! Coming out of the pandemic I had a whole family to support on DJ income and I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. When I signed up for mentorship with DJ Shortee (one of the best scratch DJs in the world!!) my business and skills up-leveled in ways I never thought possible! She has been the ultimate cheerleader, guide on the side, inspiration, and friend. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her!
