We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Bombshell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Bombshell, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was an enterprising child. I always found odd ways to make money. It has always been in my plans to own a business; deejaying organically formed into a business before starting as a fun hobby. I began to build a business model once my popularity blossomed.
In 2020- I fully trusted my career choice and went full time as a LLC.. The following year, in 2021- received an offer to grandfather “Magic Connection Inc “ a DJ/Entertainment company. It was a no brainer- expand and elevate business model.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Realizing and accepting myself as a creative first was surprisingly difficult. Yet still important to me. I want to have the freedom to curate expression through music. Aligning myself with women has granted me the opportunity to do so.
Many times we hear about the challenges of women operating in a male dominated industry; I was not any different. Early on the opportunities were slim and the pay was low. I needed to create a demand and my own lane. Prior to getting into the business I did not have any women allies or women support base. Within a year, I pivot to branding myself as a event/wedding DJ. This meant I had to say no to gigs that did not a align with branding. Early on, I produced and collaborated with women for women based events. This naturally transitioned to company and store invites as a corporate DJ.
Community affairs was instilled in me as a child. In 2020- music and social advocacy was fused as a tool to connect with the community. I produced music shows to promote harmony and peace. That led to writing opportunities to write on the same issue in a local publication. Expansion organically bridged to host/ facilitator/ music therapist for “Nurture the West”, a wellness initiative and call to action for the westend community. I act as community connector for immediate residents. We provide wellness services, music therapy, and immediate resources for the community. The first one was so successful I earned a grant to produce a documentary on the positive effects of music and love in the community.
It is a joy to see my hobby turn into a networking passion.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother intentionally kept my sisters and I around boss women. Her good friends roles ranged from- Preacher and facilitator of a church, a stylist and co-owner of a salon, an executive director/dancer/owner of dance studio, and more. Not to mention, mama and daddy co-owned a catering company called “Let us Do the Cookin”. I believe seeing women monetize their passions left a lasting impression. I wanted a piece.
