We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ SPK and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I feel like my professionalism helped me succeed. While being an artist, I still treated my craft as a business. And think that’s what separated me at the beginning of my career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an open-format DJ from Charlotte/Atlanta, and currently residing in New York specializing in House, Top 40, Dance Mashups/Remixes, and Old School Hip Hop/R&B. It definitely wasn’t easy to get to where I am today. It required being self-sufficient but also pieces together a solid support system over the years. Being a woman in the industry, you have to be 10xs better to even get acknowledged. So overcoming sexism, cliques, and longs hours were the hardest parts. I’ve learned to stay true to myself and honor my craft. I am most proud of being named 2019’s Best of Charlotte’s Best DJ for Queen City Nerve and Creative Loafing’s 2017 Best of Charlotte’s Editors Pick as well as being featured several times in the publication and podcast.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out the other DJs, artists, and mentors who helped me along my path. S/o to Jonathon Nazeer, DJ Steel Wheel, DJ Earl Grey, Yumika Smith, JC The Poet, Bluz, Leanna Eden, NiGe Hood, Black Linen, Railz The Principle, Neil Harp, Oba Shaanti, Latoya Broadie of Radio One CLT, Jeronimo of Radio One CLT, and Demetrius Brown of FUBU Radio. If I forgot someone, my bad.
