We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Wonder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was basically raised by the Entertainment Industry. It’s all I’ve ever known, just from watching TV and movies every day as a kid until now. It’s all I ever wanted to be immersed in. But now, I’m not sure if that was a good choice. 😂

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started as a kid from Delaware who was always interested in music and the arts. I was an only child, so I would seek out new ways to express myself and show the world. I really found my passion when I took a DJing class at the age of 10 at Del Tech Community College. From there I went on to DJ High School basketball games, do college radio and eventually work at Hot97 and Sirius XM. It was a hard journey in the sense that I sacrificed a normal life and sacrificed sleep to achieve my goals, but it never felt difficult at the time. Now the new journey and mission is: What’s Next. After you’ve achieved your dreams to you sit back, or continue to push yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I first came to Miami I was all about touristy things. I still love that stuff in any city I visit, but half of the places in Miami are closed after everybody’s PPP loan scams dried up. 😂 I would tell people now to check out Lagniappe, Blackbird, Lost Boy, Mama Tried, Thorn, The Bar, Baby Jane, Bougie’s, Flannigan’s, and Dolphin Mall. 😂

I thought Miami’s art scene was going to get to the next level but that seems to have fallen off a little bit as well. It felt like 2010’s NYC when I first came down here, but now people only really hang out in the daytime and they don’t spend money. So basically it’s like every other city right now.

If you like Latin house, I guess this is the place for you. Besides that it’s regular.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
SGT. Reggie Hawkins. Reggie was my first mentor and boss at Hot 97 in NYC. From there he went on to work at Sirius XM and helped me land my first job producing radio full time. He was always helpful and encouraging. I definitely wouldn’t have gotten as far as I did without him.
