We had the good fortune of connecting with Doc Halliday Golden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Doc Halliday, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is critical for growth. Taking risks had brought me the greatest opportunities, successes and relationships in my life. There has got to be a willingness to step into the unknown relationally, business-wise and probably everything else if you want to potentially maximize & optimize the outcome.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Coaching triathlon, specifically beginner triathletes is one of the joys of my life. One of the other joys is speaking about my Ironman journey and the parallels of training for a 140.6-mile Ironman race and life. I am most proud of making a difference. Within the endurance community, I have the great privilege of helping athletes build confidence and skill in something that is very physically and mentally challenging and help them grow through their fears along the way. I help them to find a confidence and ability within themselves that they didn’t know existed. Similarly, when I speak to audiences and share my humanity and frailty, the life-changing obstacles that I have overcome, and I motivate them to have a new perspective and see themselves differently, laying hold of the strength and power within them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Central Park. Cliche–but it’s the truth. It’s a peaceful oasis in the midst of a booming, loud, crazy metropolis. If they allowed me, I would take them to differnt parts of the Park on different days. Lower Loop, near the Bethesda Fountain, The Reservoir, the Ramble, The Great Lawn. There would be a few hours of people-watching and discussions. We’d hang and Eat in the East Village becasue that’s where I spent my first few years in NYC as an NYU Student. Go to some of the authentic Indian resturants. We’d see live jazz at multiple spots: The Zink Bar, Birdland and the Blue Note. There would be a lot of eating in Hell’s Kitchen, a tour of my fav Thai restaurants in the city. We would run on the East River Path, and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at Sunrise. Pick a few museums like the Lower East Side Tenament museum to visit. Battery Park for sunset. walk. outdoor Dancing in Lincoln Center.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Alison Kreideweis and Empire Triathlon Club have stood by me since day 1, and walked with me through the journey to triathlete, Ironman, coach and speaker. I would not be where I am without Alison, the coaches and teammates of Empire Tri Club.
