We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominica Certain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominica, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happy and why is very simple in many ways. The things that makes me happy is, to see the smiles on my clients faces as they leave my chair with a nice fresh style that they have picked. To see my creativity come to life so that the world can see my stamp. To make a little girl, boy, woman or man feel good or beautiful about themselves. People don’t believe that our hair is a big part of our personality or our features, but it is. As long as my clients are happy I am happy bc it lets me know that I did a job well done and I have reached my goal for that day. To some individuals it feels good to have your hair done, it makes you feel good in the inside. It’s bring your self confidence up, brights your day. Make you feel like you have a purpose to go out and make a difference in the world. Sometimes just knowing I was able to do a clients hair and hair small talk with them and made their whole day brighter. To change their mindset about how they feel about their hair. Then I’ll get them clients that becomes like family and then it’s a whole new ball game. They start texting you how you doing, happy holidays etc. that really touches my heart because that shows me that they love me just like I love them and see me just like I see them. Not only as a client to stylist but friend to friend or family to family. It’s always nice to be able to watch and see your clients hair grow and mature over time, e

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe my love for hair sets me apart from the rest of other stylists because I treat them like they are my own child. Other words how I would want some one to treat my hair. I don’t just do it for the money, I do it because I love to see everyone with flawless hair and healthy hair. I love to educate them about their hair as I’m doing the style they want. Trust me it’s been some ups and downs a long the way but I had to pray my way through them. Because it was times I wanted to give up due to the fact clients stop coming and business slowed way down. By being a single mom of three working a full time job and trying work my own hair business. Lord help is all I could say. My brand reminds me each time I see a person hair I have done and continue to keep on the right track stands for Touched By Nica! I know this is all backwards but I’m knew to this lol. But I started in the game of doing hair when I was 12years old. My stepmom used to do me and my baby sister hair every week for school, and by this time I think I was in 6th grade. So it was a big thing because I was still wearing the whole rainbow in my head full of bows and ponytails. So I said mom if I learn how to do my own hair can I. She said yes! You and your sister hair lol. I said bet. So I started with a ponytail on top of my head and one in back score. That was cute, then I got creative in my sister hair because she was still in elementary. So ponytails and braids for her lol. I was on a ball. Then I started making donuts. The buns everyone is buying in the stores, right I made mines out of two long socks and still do till this day. By 8th grade I was doing hair for wedding, but just people in the family and no of course they didn’t pay me. They buck on me like i didn’t know they where getting over on a kid lol. But it was cool I was just happy to show my talent n skills off. After that I started braiding my brothers hair, ooo buddy it was on and popping. Everyone wanted braids then, but I was still in the learning stage of and the weave part but it didn’t take me long. I was a quick learner and still is today. Everything I knw about hair it is self taught and a lot of research.

Thanks!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmmm, this is hard because it’s not much here to do. I mean to be honest I work a lot. I know it sounds sad but it’s true. But I’ll probably go to Orlando to a resort hangout there get messages, then go to Texas Roadhouse I love their bread lol. Do some shopping and find a nice R&B club for that night for drinks.
