We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominick Spaulding and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominick, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind creating my business was centered around being someone I never had when I was growing up.
I wanted to create a system that could benefit everyone in a sense of development from a standpoint of training(weight room), sprinting(more efficient runners), mentality, physicality, nutrition, how to recover and more. Holistically I wanted to create something that could allow people to be better athletes, and healthier human beings.
When I was growing up I was a really talented athlete with a good make up of skill, strength, brains and more. I lacked resources and the understanding about how to carry myself, how to take care of my body and just learning lessons from someone older than me that could relate and help me bypass a lot of mistakes I had to go through and learn on my own.
My business was created on the foundation of a system that allows me to train/ while teaching athletes/adults how to get stronger, faster, and more mobile while helping them with their psychology, help with their nutrition, and everyday prehab/rehab and recovery protocols.
The system branches deeper in details, but this is the foundation of what I do and why I wanted to take this path.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I run a performance based training business where i develop all ages and sports on how to get stronger, faster, more powerful, mobile and overall an healthier athlete
With where I sit in this current time I can truly say that as a former NFL tryout, AFL player, Head Strength coach, Arena football champion and more, that I am grateful but humble for the experiencesI had. In my early years I spent a lot of time “information gathering” about how to train, concepts behind training, how to run, the anatomy of the body and how things work so I could understand it from a bigger spectrum. I was tutored and mentored by some of the greats in the industry. When it comes to strength and conditioning with having all this information I wanted to bring it to people who didn’t have access to this type of training, and also teach them how to go about it in every way I could.
I’ve learned a lot in my time as a business owner but I would say my easiest adjustment was the non training side, meaning, the make of the financials, how to create the business, maintenance for the business and more. This was a particularly easy adjustment for school because I went to school for this, and I surrounded myself with a lot of people who ran businesses so I was always surrounded by help on how to create the business, service the business and maintain the business.
My business I can say has taken a lot of ups and downs and faced a lot of setbacks. But with every setback that came I always looked at it as a lesson, and I always adapted quickly to the situation and never dwelled for too long about the downside of what was going on.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
West Hartford center is a beautiful environment that’s filled with a plethora of places varying from ice cream shops, smoothie stores, sports stores, to coffees and breakfast shops and some of the most elegant places to eat dinner..
Hartford(downtown) – they usually have cool things to do on the weekends
– main park – movie night, concerts, food trucks
– INNER city – paint nights, chess night, bars
Connecticut has a lot of good hiking spots to check out
– Sleeping giant – New Haven
– East rock – Hamden
– West Hartford reservoir- West Hartford
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My cousin Jonah!
My cousin Jonah has been there for me and a big brother to me ever since I migrated from Jamaica to the USA to live back in the day. He’s always helped me on my path to development whether it was how to talk to girls(inside joke 8th grade), when I’m doing something that aligns with me, he’s there to talk when I’m having a difficult time with things, but more importantly he tells me when I’m out of line, he speaks the truth to me and he holds me accountable.
My cousin Jonah had guided me and cheered me on for as long as I can remember. Jonah is someone I look up to as a role model in how he conducts his business, how he’s a family man, and how he’s a great delegator even though he won’t admit it. Jonah is my guy and deserves his flowers if it wasn’t for him, I can say I wouldn’t be here! Love J
