We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique P and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for my business after spending several nights making different concoctions for my lips. I began smoking in college and eventually did so often that my lips were becoming so dehydrated that they would turn “black” or “purple”. I would Google ways to help it and all there was available was to “stop smoking” lol. Obviously that wasn’t in my plans so I started making scrubs and balms that helped repair, restore and hydrate my lips bringing them back to my liking. A few years later I found myself about to buy chapstick that I know didn’t help in the store and it hit me to just start making and selling my own. I figured I couldn’t be the only person that suffered from “ya lips turning black” and that’s how I came up with BlowSumMo Lip Care.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to consider myself an artist in the lip care or skincare world. I don’t only make lip care but I design all of my products and bring them to life. My rolling trays are exclusively designed and painted to the consumers delight and I aim to please.
I feel like my whole business began based off what sets me apart from others: my focus on smokers lips, that’s my cherry topping. I could say when I began there weren’t any lip care lines to use for smokers lips and today you can definitely find it. Professionally I got here today by combining my expertise I’d highlight and use in my resumes and what I may have picked up at the past companies I worked for so it wasn’t as challenging as I assumed it to be to organize and adopt the system I have today. I’m not perfect though so there are some challenges I face in my creations. I press on and get through the trials however.
Some lessons I have learned along the way is this isn’t for the weak hearted or minded and you have to be prepared for all odds or prepared to even them out. It can get rough but when I look at my progress against what I would be doing back at the companies I smile and go a little harder.
I want the world to know that you can just about do what you set your mind to…. with a dollar and a dream… And succeed. Even if you want to become the highest position at at workplace! Just know you can do it. Don’t self sabotage yourself with what you think you need and don’t have God will provide it!! I’ve seen it too many times along this journey. But consistency and quality is key!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
come back Good thing it’s a best friend because they’ll know how much I enjoy the simplicities lol this response should be envisioned with the thought that COVID came and put a hault on hanging out for a couple years so other than club living room these places may or may not be operative.
So because I love these restaurants and will be circulating them all week I’ll begin with what we will be eating. Breakfast at Guttas Kitchen or iKrave DAILY. Lunch varies but if we have to decide quickly I’ll probably take my BF to snappers for a lunch special or Chef creole. Perry wings has my heart forever and Steve’s pizza for snacking and I can’t forget Jamaica house whenever I want some curry!
Hanging out with my BF in town will include lots of beach bumming and jet skiing, bar hopping in Wynwood at Wood Tavern and Brick House or shooting pool at one of my favorites Styx with those delicious wings. There’s a chance we could end up in a nightclubs, Da Cave, Mint or Playhouse and day party after a day of pampering and shopping/thrifting depending on the mood or vibe. I’m always down for open mic/poetry nights as well. Many of the events I attend are put together by Pretty High Club and Late & Bake pop ups or puff and paints.
That’s pretty much my main sources of entertainment until I explore more.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s always something and/or someone that helped spark or push you to “jump” and start things. I was definitely hesitant about beginning this whole idea until I became a mother. Sounds super cliche but I really can say that push to ultimately begin was after I had become a single mom unable to find a job. I had little to no support and I used what I learned as a retail manger, bank teller, independent contractor and warehouse laborer before motherhood to create my own regime.
Since startup 2017 there has been many supporters I would love to shout out! These individuals have motivated and supported me in so many ways and gave me opportunities to share their audiences with my brand as a vendor, partner or sponsor! I am Grateful!
