We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorrian Bridges and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorrian, what do you want your legacy to be?
To be 100% honest, if people don’t remember me that’s cool with me. I’d much rather the ideas and values live on. I stand firm on biblical values such as honor, faith, and integrity. As a Man of God, it’d burden my heart to see my name live on but those ideas die in the process. Especially now considering morality and virtues are becoming more and more blurred.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My wife, Cynthia, and I started a performing arts center and private school. Being a creative educator only makes sense if you are a creative first. I’ve been writing music and spoken word poetry for a little over a decade. I tour every summer, going to high school and speaking at places around the country. It’s been very challenging and even more fulfilling. Nothing about it is easy. Don’t let anyone fool you. It’s hard work just keeping the love alive, not to mention the technical and business aspects. I’ve found that the key to keeping the passion in the music and writing all comes down to one thing. The why. Why do you create? It has to go beyond something fleeting. You’re dedicated is birthed out of servitude. If you can create for the sake of helping and serving others, you’ll never retire. That’s not to be mistaken with creating for the approval of others. Two very different things. It’s a matter of creating for them without creating FOR them. That has kept me going for so long. The world should know that Jesus is King, the only way to Heaven, and we’re created to represent him well. We are loved and have so much purpose and beauty.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Immediately, we’d have to grab some food. La Haciendita Super Taqueria, Dales BBQ, or Sunrise City Cafe. One of the 3, nothing more. After we’d check stroll through the Peacock Arts District to see the murals and happenings that’s going on. Possibly, catch an open mic. We’d have to make time to go into downtown and enjoy the water. You can’t really beat going to the Jetty. The boardwalk takes right out into the middle of the water.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Where do I begin? All of my students as The Lindsay School of the Arts. Not only do they inspire and encourage me but they also challenge and refine me. Many people have invested in me because they believed in me and all of those people deserve their credit and honor. However, there is something special about seeing the next generation and knowing that the things promote, do, and say are pivotal to the direction of their life and therefore the world; it’s life changing.
