We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Adil Mohammed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Adil, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Harmony United Psychiatric Care (HUPC) with the goal of making mental health services more accessible to everyone. Local Florida residents are among some of the worst equipped with mental health resources in the nation, as Florida ranks 46th in terms of its accessibility to mental healthcare. With this in mind, I knew how important it was to offer in-person and secure telehealth visits for residents who don’t have access to local mental health resources. In fact, HUPC clinics are some of the only clinics available that typically offer same-day or next-day appointments for patients as well as a 24-7 on-call service for urgent client needs.

Additionally, my vision with HUPC was to provide the utmost quality of mental health services for our patients and earn their trust. We pride ourselves in providing care that is filled with compassion, respect and understanding so that patients know they can count on us for their mental health needs. My goal for the future of HUPC is to also implement innovations in mental healthcare to improve quality and efficiency for our patients.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As mentioned previously, HUPC is a provider of comprehensive outpatient mental health and psychiatry services in Florida. We have adopted the mission to address this critical problem of lack of mental health resources by promising quicker and more efficient care through its offering of new patient appointments in as little as the same or next day. We offer an experienced team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners, certified physician assistants and licensed therapists, to ensure we are Florida’s most reliable and compassionate mental health clinic.

Starting any business comes with the potential for failure. However, I do enjoy taking risks, and taking a chance on HUPC was the most rewarding experience of my life. I am proud that this leap of faith has helped me successfully operate a business that is addressing an issue impacting 20% of all U.S. adults and teens, according to the CDC. The work that we do at HUPC to help our patients is the most rewarding part, as I get to make a difference in people’s lives every day by addressing their mental health needs.

There were times when I first started HUPC when I was fearful of failure and thought about giving up. However, my desire to help people with their mental health needs kept me driven to achieve my goals. Also, my ability to manage my work has helped me stay focused and ambitious throughout my time as CEO and Founder of HUPC. I recommend that those thinking of starting a business should always remind themselves of the reasons why they want to do so. Having a goal to work towards will always motivate you to keep pushing through even when you feel like giving up. The hard times will pass if you stick with it and have faith in the work that you are doing. I am so thankful that I never gave up and that I get to fulfill my dream of making a positive impact in people’s lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s ironic that despite offering telehealth services throughout the broader state of Florida, I haven’t yet explored Miami as much as I’d like. The demands of serving patients across the state have kept me quite occupied, but I’m eagerly looking forward to taking a break and immersing myself in the vibrant culture of Miami, especially with my family. The idea of exploring the city’s diverse neighborhoods, enjoying its culinary delights, and creating lasting memories with my loved ones adds an extra layer of anticipation to this upcoming adventure.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my residency, I didn’t have a mentor who taught me how to start my own business, so I learned everything through trial and error. I started in a 1,000-square-foot office with two part-time assistants, and it’s incredible to see what the practice has grown into today. I owe my success to the staff at HUPC, who are committed to providing the best possible care for our patients daily. They have the same passion for helping others as I do, and it’s been great to share this common goal to help others together. Additionally, I couldn’t have achieved this success without the support of my family. They stood by me through all of the trial and error moments in learning how to become an entrepreneur and operate a psychiatric practice. I am forever grateful for their continued support for my greatest passion, and I couldn’t have achieved all that I have today without them.
