We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Courtney Cantrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Courtney, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“To Love Oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance”-Oscar Wilde If one can have a loving relationship towards themself, it emanates outward to society and allows for quality relationships with others. Loving oneself whole heartedly can be a difficult task. It entails loving ones positive attributes while working towards self-growth without an overly critical ego. Many people often seek out relationships with others without ever focusing on the most important relationship, which is with themself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a psychologist, it is a privilege to work in my field and to assist individuals who are seeking out self-improvement. I find being a psychologist an art form. It requires creative integration of patient information and applying clinical interventions in ways that will have the most meaning to them, in order to facilitate change. My treatment methodology is integrative, meaning that I utilize multiple treatment modalities and I tailor interventions to the individual, couple, or family with whom I am working with. Based upon the symptoms and areas of improvement I will derive what interventions will be most beneficial for the patient, while constantly assessing the utility of the interventions and making changes as needed. I have been in private practice for four years now and I took the leap after being in a group practice for two years. I always wanted to be a business owner and like the freedom of making business decisions associated with projects and areas for growth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely recommend a beach day at Fort Lauderdale Beach and participating in a full moon kayak trip in the evening at Park Ocean. Next, I would suggest they stop by Park and Ocean after the kayak trip and sit at a picnic table under the lights across from the beach and sip on a Frose and enjoy some live music. For a fun brunch experience I would recommend Croissant Time in Fort Lauderdale as they have live music outside and the BEST pastries and croissants.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents were business owners and exemplified a strong work ethic. They conveyed such pride associated with being a business owner and the responsibility to providing jobs to the community and creating a fair work environment. I always looked up to the independence they had as business owners but also the huge responsibility they had to their family, community, and employees. There was such a social importance they bestowed upon me with their ideals of social justice for work and creating a fair work environment through pay and opportunity. My parents never had vacations and worked at least 12 hours a day every day. I have the utmost respect for my parents and the value of work and autonomy they taught me associated with being business owners.
