We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Joseph Gretzula D.O., F.A.A.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Joseph, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
1) The concept of “Beauty Within” was born during the initial onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time period I was unable to work and had over 4 weeks to contemplate on this very unusual pandemic affecting every single human being. During that time sequence, I began to reevaluate my own personal health and also decided to mirror what I practice in my own life and share those concepts with others. The concept first evolved at approximately 2:30 in the morning when I texted a dear friend of mine who is an artist in Vienna, Austria. I have always been fascinated with the beauty and the understanding of one’s eyes. It is based on the concept that the eyes are the entrance to the soul.

I discussed with my friend the concept of created a giant iris of an eye which would be the symbol of Beauty Within. My friend, Norbert Brunner from Vienna, had perviously created two beautiful eyes for Guerlain, a cosmetic company on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, France. The two of us spent over two hours discussing my concept and my thoughts with regards to the creation of this iris. I wanted it to be placed at the entrance to our facility, and as each person walked in, they would be able to see themselves through the pupil, which would actually. be a mirror and would allow them to see themselves and reflect on what they truly feel about themselves, not only aesthetically but internally through improving wellness, stress management, sleep, nutrition, and mindful meditation. This was of paramount importance during this unusual time sequence, as the entire world was in total disarray, and I felt that each of us should reflect on one’s own health. Therefore, the whole premise regarding Beauty Within began during a time period when there was so much negativity and fear in the world; yet it allowed me the opportunity to reevaluate my own life and redesign my own practice, as I was a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon previously, in attempt to create a concept that would help my patients in an entirely different perspective.

2) What is the most important factor behind your success?

The success of Beauty Within is based purely on the ability to help others feel good about themselves, both inside and out. The concept is a simple one, yet at times so difficult to initiate and follow through. The concept of Beauty Within is an attempt to increase one’s own health span and not just lifespan, by living life filled with happiness, health and wellbeing.

3) What role has risk played in your life and career?

I would not be in the position I am in today without taking risks. Obviously, when one takes risks, you may not always succeed, yet we continue to learn from our failures, and eventually risks breed success. I have had many setbacks in my life which in the end have led to a much more gratifying and successful career. Without those risks, I could not even imagine being in the position I am in today enjoying the opportunity to care for patients and to help people feel better about themselves.

4) How has your business influenced the health community or world?

I am truly excited about this new venture, as I can see even in its early infancy the excitement and enthusiasm in how people have responded to this very basic and simple concept. It is truly rewarding to help people feel better about themselves, both aesthetically and internally, and I would hope that this very simple concept, which has already influenced so many in our community, will continue to expand abroad.

5. How do you define success?

Success is happiness in enjoying every single day, both in one’s workplace and outside of work. Each day I thank God for another day of life and for the opportunity to serve Him, and I ask for His guidance in caring for my family and in helping me to make the right decisions in the care of each and every patient. There is no monetary value that can be placed on enjoying what I truly do in life serving my patients and in being a husband and father.

6. All right, so let’s jump right in. The Shout Out Series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the effort, support, mentorship, love, and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc., that you want to dedicate your Shout Out to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?

There have been so many individuals who have helped in nurturing my career and aspirations in so many different ways. First and foremost, I must thank my mother who was always there with support and love no matter what. She was most encouraging in times of failure and was helpful in nurturing a positive attitude and in constant reinforcement in the development of my self-esteem.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, which was the first School of Pharmacy in North America established in 1821. While attending PCP&S, I had the opportunity to develop a friendship with our Dean, Daniel Hussar, who was an amazing mentor during my entire pharmacy career. It was Dr. Hussar who approached me upon graduation and informed me that he felt my passion in caring for patients should continue in a different direction and suggested that I should apply to medical school. It was through his encouragement and enthusiasm and my love of medicine that I then applied and got accepted to medical school. I also need to thank the former Chairman of the University of Miami Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, Dr. Harvey Blank, who was one of the most renowned and respected dermatologists throughout the world, who gave me the opportunity to pursue my career in dermatology. I would also like to thank the many physicians, nurses, and other ancillary services throughout my medical career. There is too numerous a number of individuals to individually recognize. They all provided a foundation in teaching me curiosity, compassion, and empathy, all of which are important values necessary in providing excellent patient care.

7. Tell us more about your career. We would love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about? How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you have learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I have had the opportunity to study Pharmacy, as well as the opportunity to train as both an osteopathic and allopathic physician. I have always been interested in a more holistic approach to medicine than what was traditionally taught for many years in the medical profession. I was fortunate enough to be accepted in dermatology in one of the most prestigious dermatologic training programs in the country. Our Chairman, Dr. Harvey Blank, one of the most renowned and respected dermatologists throughout the world, had a unique vision in training our residents in cutaneous surgery, as he felt we were the experts in understanding the skin. He was the first chairman in the United States to change the name of his department to the University Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, recognizing the fact that his residents were trained in cutaneous surgery and were the experts in the field of skin pathology. We were also given the opportunity to learn cosmetic procedures including hair transplantation and dermabrasion, as well as the early onset of fillers including collagen and later Botox. Dermatology is one of the most rewarding careers in that it gives one the opportunity to practice general dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and cosmetic surgery.

I have had many challenges along the way, all of which have helped me to grow as an individual and have made me a better physician. The lessons that I have learned include persistence in following your dreams, whatever they may be, and to never accept no as an answer.

I am truly excited regarding my new venture, Beauty Within, which is a Wellness and Antiaging Center that deals not only with aesthetics but helps to teach others to improve their wellness and increase their health span through proper nutrition, sleep, stress management and through mindful meditation.
