We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Marcine Adams, PhD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Marcine, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
People are unaware of how many individuals in the field are not certified educators or experts. Tutoring franchises are owned by individuals with no teacher experience and it flows into the people who they hire. Many tutors supporting students have no teaching experience. I strongly stand behind that knowing content well does not correlate to being able to teach it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a first generation college student the road to a doctorate was not achieved without a few road blocks. When people ask me how I overcame them it comes from not taking no for an answer and believing in myself. I think these characteristics spill into how I overcome hurdles as a small business owner.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots to visit in the city, if you have never been, would have to be the staples including Lincoln Park Zoo, Field Museum, and Millennium Park. Before or after visiting these staples making time to stop in Chinatown, Italian Village, Ukrainian Village for a variety of amazing food options would be my next suggestion.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today without the support of my husband, Jeremy, who deserves recognition for always being there for me. His patience and listening ear has been essential in being able to get through the day to day hurdles as a small business owner.
