We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Patty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Patty, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As an entrepreneur and business owner, you have to take risks to start and grow your business. I had to defy the odds from the beginning. I was one of only a few women of color to graduate from my dental school. Right after dental school, I moved to South Florida and in my early 30s I started my first practice in a new market where I had no connections. My concept was untraditional too – a dental spa and boutique. Bringing a new business concept to life took risks in many different ways, including financial, operational, market and reputational. But I was just as passionate then as I am now about dentistry and serving the community, and that’s why I saw those risks as opportunities. To this day, I strive to continue revolutionizing the dental industry and hope to inspire other female entrepreneurs to continue breaking boundaries in their fields.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2012, at the young age of 32, I opened my private practice and the first dental spa in Florida, Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique & Spa, an award-winning destination for cosmetic dentistry and luxurious experiences in South Florida. Over the past decade, my office has changed the perception of going to the dentist and redefined it as a tranquil experience through our untraditional business concept. After being featured on “Good Morning America,” I became a national sensation, garnering clients from all over the country. This year, I opened my second concept, Dr. Patty Miami, Miami’s first upscale cosmetic dental practice combined with a cosmetic medical surgical facility. Designed as an epicenter of opulence and modern day glamor, Dr. Patty Miami provides surgical and non-surgical cosmetic services, and features a cafe and bar, an open-air rooftop for lounging and hosting special events, and a restorative steam hammam to further boost the immune system, rejuvenate the body and relax the mind.

One of the lessons I’ve learned along the way of running a business is that it’s okay to ask for outside help and not have to manage all aspects of my business. When I first started my practice, I was splitting my time between too many roles while still seeing patients full-time and that was not effective (or healthy for my own wellbeing) in the long run. I think it’s important for business owners to realize that asking for help is not a weakness and can actually help you focus on what’s most important for you and your clients, and to grow in a positive and profitable way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite outdoor places to visit and take visitors to include Pinecrest Gardens, the Design District, The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (they have a wonderful farmer’s market!), or the shops at Brickell. For drinks and bites, I like the restaurants at CityPlace Doral, and definitely KYU for dinner. For a day of relaxation, a spa and pool day at The Standard in Miami Beach is just perfect. For a weekend of arts and culture with the family, I like to visit The Pérez Art Museum Miami and Frost Museum, followed by a healthy lunch at Verde. For a fun staycation, I enjoy the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa, which has a water park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to Femfessionals, which is a women’s networking group with local gatherings for women launching and growing their businesses. This organization gave me roots in South Florida when I first started my business after dental school. Years later, I still have strong relationships with many of the women I’ve met thanks to this group.
