We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew Calloway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Drew, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
We are often told, if we spend more time on the front end preparing, that we will save time on the back end by not having to “fix” it. I couldn’t disagree more (generally).
I’m a believer in “good enough, is good enough” and you can work the kinks out later. Put plan to action, the wheels in motion, and the pieces will fall into place.
A mentor of mine once told me, “Drew, great is the enemy of good” and that really stuck with me. It’s natural to change your mind, make edits, or realize the decision you made just wasn’t the right decision. It’s the learning process, and thats the fun part!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beauty Shop Miami was founded almost 3 years ago, by myself and my partner, Martin Ducasse. Our space took 13 months (who’s counting) to build so we ran a 3 chair hair salon out of our house for over a year! Our clients however, LOVED IT! They loved feeling “at home” and part of the family. That same feeling was important for us to bring to the salon. Our motto is “A friendly and ‘feel good’ salon specializing in beautiful hair, wrapped in superior guest services”!
When you visit Beauty Shop Miami, it’s not unlikely you will get a smile or have a chat with every member of our team. We have a delicious beverage menu, blankets for the shampoo area, top of the line hair treatments, an incredibly talented manicurist, and an eye for detail that keeps people coming back for more!
Also, every decision we make is done with sustainability in mind, resulting in a negative carbon footprint!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, we would for sure start each day with a strong Cuban coffee from Tinta y Cafe here in Miami Shores to start the day off right! I love the art scene in Miami so we would squeeze a museum trip in during the day to the ICA or perhaps PAMM.
A trip the to beach is a must, either Haulover if we are feeling calm, or indulge at Soho House if I’ve the mental strength to fight that valet line!
If lucky enough, score an evening sunset boat tour of downtown Miami and follow that with an expensive but worth it cocktail at the Surf Club!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that come to mind here, but if I have to nail down a few, I wouldn’t be where I am without the love and unconditional support of my parents and the solid and consistent mentorship of one of my best friends and fellow hairdresser Mark DeBolt. I come from a very tiny town in NC, where being gay was far outside the norm, but my parents have loved, accepted, and encouraged me every step of the way, accepting my authentic self!
Additionally, my friend Mark, who I met early on in my career and who happens to also now be a salon owner with his partner (like myself). We have coached each other along the way, and his mentorship has been invaluable.
