We had the good fortune of connecting with Dyson Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dyson, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
With my first business being myself, my thought process behind starting it was rooted in an accumulation of unsolicited market research. After several appearances and performances on multiple entertainment platforms, my services became even more in demand. I took this as a sign that packaging myself as a brand and a business would be lucrative.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As for my art, I mostly consider myself a songwriter. The majority of my success with songwriting has been in my country, The Bahamas. My proudest moment in songwriting was in 2005 or 2006 while performing a song I wrote for the Xtra Band called Drop Down and Come Up Slow. As I began to sing I noticed that many of the audience were singing as well. I stopped singing in a bit of surprise, and the crowd kept going. It was an amazing experience.

Since then, I’ve had many of these moments. I often hear people singing my songs without them even knowing that I wrote them. I do believe myself lucky to have been given the opportunity to write for some really major bands and artists like the Xtra Band, Visage Band Bahamas, Rik Carey, and of course Baha Men to name a few. Without their amazing level of musicianship, my songs may not have been as successful as they are.

There is nothing easy about the entertainment industry. It will break you in many ways. Loads of betrayal, disrespect, and failures. Way more failures than successes. Sometimes you throw in the towel, but if you love it, you eventually pick that towel back up again. That’s the key to surviving the downside of the business. You have to do whatever you need to do to keep going. Believe in yourself but also surround yourself with inspiring things and or people.

What I want the world to know about my brand and my story is that it took decades for me to get as far as I’ve able to get so far, and that there’s still more that I want to accomplish before I can consider myself done. To not sound so abstract, I want the world to keep reading my story for as long as I continue to add to it. That’s probably abstract as well. Oh well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok bestie! I’m back in school studying Music Production and Audio Engineering at the moment but what is college life without a week of irresponsible behavior!

Location: The Bahamas

First stop from the airport will be to Deno’s conch stand for the best conch salad in Nassau! We’ll attempt to quell the goat pepper burn with local beer.

Next, we’ll take our tipsy selves to the airbnb. No, a liquor store, then the airbnb. That’s a chill spot until day 2.

Day 2 starts with breakfast from a souse house. Either sheep tongue or pig feet souse and a order of chicken souse just in case the others look too suspicious for you to swallow. Then its a beach day with more local beer. Late lunch at Bamboo Shack and then we chill at one of the two mega resorts.

Day 3 starts with breakfast at Gone Fishing. Boiled or Stew fish accompanied by vodka and apple juice. Lol. My friend and restaurant owner, Haimish swears by this cocktail, so drink up! From here we tipsy walk down the downtown strip to pick up souvenirs, take pictures of and with the historic landmarks, and catch the ever present culturally provided jokes. If the sun is on full blast we’ll only have enough energy to drink more rum this night.

Day 4 we turn up at either my mom’s house or my sister’s. Both spots usually have food and drinks. That’s an all day event but later we may hit the Piano Lounge to jam with the Essence Band. If we do that then there’s a possibility we’ll end up at a night club after. I can’t say which one but my friends Big L and Joe Koolz will likely be our host. We’ll take lot’s of dollar bills.

Day 5 we’ll probably begin by going to sleep. When we get up we’ll nurse old joints with water and a poolside lawn chair.

Day 6 we’ll get up early to get on a power boat and go island hopping. Swim with some dolphins, feed some swimming pigs, and dive off of a clift into a blue hole.

Day 7 I drop you to the airport with a box of asprin.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are several people that have contributed to my development. My parents, this includes my aunt Stephanie who reminded me of my potential. My first real boss, Paul who help me to see myself as a professional with above average ability. All of the band leaders and living legends I’ve been extremely fortunate to sit and talk with, perform with, and learn from. I believe that my success is due to my obedience to the lessons taught by the people that believe in me. Far too many to list, but this shoutout is dedicated to all of them!
