We had the good fortune of connecting with Eduardo Abad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eduardo, what inspires you?

My inspiration is based on the amazing geography of Venezuela and the need I feel to show it to the world.
Many of the remote places in the country that I visited on exploration and photography trips are unique on the planet and completely unknown, even to Venezuelans themselves.
When you are outside your country, in some way you become an ambassador and I feel great satisfaction when my paintings produce admiration, not only for their artistic quality, but for showing a surprising country.
Of course, it’s not just Venezuela. Sometimes, an image or photograph appears before my eyes and an almost instantaneous bond is established that generates a certain “need” to capture it on a canvas. A face, a bird or a city can ignite that spark that is difficult to explain.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
First of all, my painting is figurative. This preference is based on my taste for representing reality in a personal way, with great respect for forms but without trying to create hyperrealism. I play with colors and their saturation, with contrasts and lights. But the form is there, taken from reality. The initial drawing that remains under the painting is the structure that holds everything.
All this is also reinforced by the fact that I have always been a nature and landscape photographer as well as a mountaineer. Both activities have always gone hand in hand in my case.
I have had the privilege of capturing images of very remote places and from them, paint many of my works. I call them “Pintugraphs” for that reason. The term has been well received.
Making expeditions, taking photographs and finally managing to capture them on a canvas using acrylic paints has taken me years, but it is exciting.
The greatest difficulty so far continues to be showing my works in a world oversaturated with images and paintings of all levels of quality, where the parameters of their commercial valuation are often absurd.
A lesson? Stay focused on your goal. Stay true to yourself. Keep working and don’t wait for anyone. “Amat Victoria Curam” (Latin for “Victory Loves Preparation”).

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The city is inexhaustible. I don’t know it well and I don’t dare recommend specific places. But taking a boat ride in the bay or a flight in an ultralight plane along its beaches and luxury houses have been unforgettable experiences for me.
The night views of areas like Brickell are worthy of a painting (I already did a couple of them!).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without a doubt, my father deserves a lot of credit. When I was very young he had the vision of enrolling me in a painting school in Caracas, realizing that I demonstrated a special talent for artistic drawing. Thanks to him, I had an excellent academic education, which gave me the tools to develop my current personal style.
The importance of learning formal techniques is currently underestimated, but for me it has been a crucial element. Thanks Dad!
I also have to thank the support of a small group of very good friends, who have been interested in helping me in many ways. Some, because they are in love with art. Others, because they simply want to help, getting opportunities, contacts or places to exhibit my works. And others because they want to see the images that remind them of Venezuela anywhere in the world. Their support have been crucial. I don’t name them, but they know who they are.
Finally, my wife has been a strong motivation to maintain my conviction that my art will be more recognized every day. She manages my social networks and is always looking for advertising strategies and new opportunities or contacts.
She thinks my works are wonderful and I never argue with her. 😉
