We had the good fortune of connecting with Elen Boesing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elen, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor is our community and what brought us together.
Miami is going through an influx of new residents and many locals are having to deal with the consequences of that, so it’s natural to see negative comments and connotations towards newcomers. Having a community where we can connect with each other, find resources, pursue shared goals together and leverage our growing numbers in order to connect with and find support from other local communities is key to the success of New Miami Girls.
Differently than New York or Los Angeles, where a lot of people move for career purposes, most of us chose Miami because we were looking for a better lifestyle. Going through the pandemic helped us realize that we needed to prioritize our well being and Miami seemed to offer just that. This move has a deeper meaning in our lives. That’s something we share and it’s represented through our brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work today is split between two main roles. One is developing compelling content for digital campaigns through my Branding & Media Agency Revl Studios. The other one is leading, managing, and creating content for our community, New Miami Girls.
Both derive from my passion to make a difference in today’s society, whether it is through genuine content or by helping create opportunities for my peers. When I founded Revl Studios with my partner 5 years ago, the goal was to apply our film & music industry backgrounds to develop creative campaigns for our clients. Since then we have collaborated with incredible artists and brands, but we have also dedicated time towards running a Film & Music Video festival where we were able to support and highlight incredible talent in the industry.
The desire to bring people together in order to create something meaningful has always been a driving force in my life. The idea to start New Miami Girls, came from me being on Bumble BFF to find new friends during a difficult move after the pandemic from Los Angeles to Miami. While using the app, I realized a majority of the girls had also just moved here from a different state and were going through similar challenges. We needed a place where we could all connect, share our experiences and support each other during this transition.
At the time, I wasn’t even using Facebook that much but I had recently joined some local groups to find an apartment, and I was inspired by how helpful they were. That’s when I decided to create a group on the platform and invite other “new girls” I had been meeting in the app. I was hearing many people had moved to Miami during and after the pandemic, but never did I imagine it was going to become a hotspot for newcomers, and never did I imagine our group was going to grow to three thousand members in less than a year and become such an active community. What was supposed to be just a small group of friends has now become a brand and a movement of sorts.
I was born in Brazil, but I’ve lived most of my adult life in the U.S. at places like Wisconsin, New York and California, where I become very “americanized”. So even though there’s a big Brazilian community in Miami, when I moved here, I still felt like an outsider and struggled to make friends I related with. Through this community, I found amazing friendships and a purpose!
I’ve met so many incredible women through this group and I’m still amazed to hear how important it was for their transition to Miami. It helped them find jobs, apartments, free services, roommates, best friends, and other crucial resources not only for their move but also their pursuit of a better lifestyle, which is the main reason why so many of us decided to move to Miami.
As our community keeps growing and making a local impact, we have been partnering up with local businesses to continue to bring value to our members as well as support and connect with local communities. We’re also developing new content (of course, there’s a podcast coming) to cover some of the most common topics discussed in our group, such as pros and cons of each neighborhood, the current state of the rental market, Miami lifestyle and its (terrifying) dating scene.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s so much to do in Miami, it’s both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. F.O.M.O. is a real feeling here and I’m still learning to live with it. There is always a concert, a festival or a conference happening that matches perfectly with my professional and personal lifestyle. If it’s not Art Basel, it’s Music Week, Fashion Week, Tech Week, Bitcoin Week. I wonder if at some point they will run out of weeks for all the different industries to gather.
Most of my family and friends have already visited Miami and explored areas like South Beach and Little Havana, so whenever they visit, I try to take them to places where I go more often.
I live in Downtown, so Brickell is an easy choice for a first stop. It has it all – the ocean views, the city lights, the high rises and so many amazing bars, restaurants and coffee shops. I love the burgers at Kush and the views at Crazy About You and the new rooftop bar, Rosa Sky. I also adore the little area behind the church with the food trucks where you can make a quick stop after a long walk around the Brickell Keys.
Next stop would be Wynwood, obviously. I can never get enough of the art and diversity of that area. I enjoy the atmosphere and food options at 1-800-Lucky and having lived in both New York and Los Angeles, I’m certainly excited about the Smorgsburg that opened up recently. I’m also desperate to check out the drag brunch at R Bar and for what I’ve heard about it, I can already tell it’s going to be a favorite for me.
If we feel like a beach day, Key Biscayne is where we would go. The beaches are beautiful, clean and not too crowded. Water sports are always fun too. I’ve recently gone paddleboarding in Sunset Harbour for the first time and it was an amazing experience. Miami sunsets are insane!
I enjoy going out dancing and the club scene in Miami is perfect for that, but when the goal is to have a drink and be able to catch up on our lives, I definitely prefer a bar setting. Bodega Taqueria in South Beach is a great spot. The tacos are delicious, but the speakeasy in the back is why I go there. The decor, the live music, and the people, are a perfect formula! Lost Boy in Downtown also has a very interesting ambience and a chill crowd.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to my business and life partner, Fernando Rize.
From the day we met, he has been a huge influence on my career decisions inspiring me to believe in my own voice, think outside the box and utilize my experience in content creation and leadership roles to bring people together.
Without his encouragement and support, I may not have had the confidence to put myself out there and embark on the path I am on today.
