We had the good fortune of connecting with Elise Chantelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elise Chantelle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My initial reasons for starting my own business and bridging into the world of making and releasing music had nothing to do with earning money and everything to do with passion. I’ve always loved to sing and create, and I felt that exploring my musical side was long overdue. It wasn’t about a year into making music that I began learning more about how to monetize it via music royalties, collaborations, live performances, etc. Today’s highly digital and remote world makes it an ideal place for independent artists to earn money for pursuing their passions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I tend to describe my music style as a blend of all my favorite genres – the clubby, bouncy beats and themes of pop, gorgeous, dreamy vocals of R&B, and the overall mood and vibe of electronic music. I’m proud of the fact that I’m growing in my art every day and getting a little bit closer to that “sound” that’s uniquely mine. I grew up heavily influenced by pop girls like Britney Spears, and as an adult have grown to love many elements of airy, smooth female vocals like those of Billie Eilish and Sabrina Claudio. I like to think I am a product of the artists that inspire me, whilst still maintaining that indescribable something that makes my music “Elise Chantelle.”

I got to where I am now by practicing my craft and making an effort to get better every day. I regularly meet with my vocal coach, have taken online courses to get better at producing and writing, perform at open mic nights regularly, and even enrolled in piano lessons in mid twenties. I believe there’s no limit to our potential – we have to make the effort to get better!

I think my biggest challenge musically has been confidence. I didn’t sing in front of anyone for years due to shyness and fear of messing up. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that mistakes are BOUND to happen. It’s how you recover and learn from them that matters and helps you grow. I want others to take from my story that it’s never too late to pursue a passion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up in Miami, so there are tons of places in the city that are close to my heart! Here are some of my favorite spots:

Breakfast: I love breakfast and could have it for every meal. Some of my favorite breakfast spots are La Estación Cafe in Brickell for a tasty Cuban tostada, a cortadito and a savory omelet. For a boozy brunch, I love Batch in Brickell. They also happen to be Miami’s Gator bar, and I’m a UF alum. Lastly, I love Greenstreet Cafe in Coconut Grove. It’s a great place to people watch whilst dining on some red velvet pancakes.

Outdoor vibes: One of my favorite things to do on a nice Miami day is to take a walk by the water. I love strolling around Brickell Key to look at the boats and the Miami skyline.

Lunch: My favorite lunch spot is probably Mister 01 – they have locations all across Miami, in Brickell, Miami Beach, Wynwood, Coconut Grove, and more. Their extraordinary pizzas are out of this world. Pro tip: If you like truffle, try the “Claudio.”

Dinner: I’m Cuban, so I have to mention “La Carreta” in this piece at least once. Being a TRUE Miami girl, the Kendall location is my spot of choice. The garlic butter bread they give to start is enough to make me make the drive out to Kendall. But I stay for the croquetas and the grilled palomilla steak.

Nightlife: I’m a regular at the Tea Room at the East Hotel in Brickell – they have great music, great cocktails and a speakeasy ambiance that makes me feel like I’m in the know. If I’m in a singing mood (which let’s be honest, I always am), I go to Sweet Caroline karaoke bar in Brickell. Spot me singing “Part of Your World” from the Little Mermaid there at least once a month. For a more chill evening, I love visiting Lagniappe in the Design District for a glass of wine, a charcuterie board, and an eclectic ambiance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my vocal coach, Minerva Borjas Owen (@vitaesmusica). She’s an insanely talented singer, songwriter, vocal producer and vocal coach in South Florida. Minerva gave me the confidence to pursue my passion for singing by giving me the skills to enhance my talent to the fullest!
