We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Babaian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The amount of time that goes into VR content creation, specifically Mixed Reality, which is filming myself inside VR via a green screen and powerful PC. This is the type of content that I do most. It takes a lot of setup and a lot of tech! After I get something on film that I’m happy with, there’s video editing, photo editing for a cover photo/thumbnail, writing my description, and preparing my post/posts. On average, I’d say it takes me five hours to create and post a 15-second Instagram Reel! And for a YouTube video, it depends on the content, but it usually takes me a few days!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create VR fitness content. Most of the type of content I create is called Mixed Reality. This is where I film myself in VR, in front of a green screen, then run it all through software on my computer so you can see me in VR!
What sets me apart from others is that most of my content is based around one game, Synth Riders. I like to try other things from time, but my favorite content to make is what I’m doing every day for a workout and for fun.
I’m most excited to see how VR technology advances and what that means for fitness as well as for creators.
Content creation is not a profession for me, it’s a hobby, but I got here today by sharing what I’m passionate about. After overcoming initial nervousness about putting myself out there, it was very easy for me to share what I love. The only difficult part was the technology side of it. I had to get the right hardware and software, then learn how to use it all. I overcame my challenges with much patience. It took many months of learning, trial, and error to make my first Mixed Reality video and another year until I was happy with how my recordings looked.
Some lessons l learned were not to take myself too seriously and just have fun. When it comes to filming Mixed Reality, I doubt anyone loves their very first attempts. It takes a lot of time to learn how to make quality videos and look comfortable in them, but the only way to get better is to keep doing it!
What I want the world to know about me is that the reason I’m so passionate about sharing VR fitness is because it’s the only thing out of many things I’ve tried that’s been exciting and effective enough for me to stick with long-term. While VR has gained popularity in the past few years, using it for fitness isn’t talked about as much as I think it should be, so when I discovered it, I knew I had to tell as many people as possible!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is easy for me to answer because my best friend, whom I met through my game, is visiting the area and the United States for the first time in a few months. We plan to do most of the major theme parks, but I’m always most excited to take people to my favorite smaller park, Gatorland! I don’t plan out food and drink places because there are so many amazing spots that I feel it’s more fun to be spontaneous. If we have time, something not touristy that I like to do with people is walking around Bok Tower Gardens or going Kayaking at Shingle Creek Regional Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have two shoutouts. First, to my husband, who’s been by my side for over fifteen years now, supporting me without question in everything I do. And second, to my favorite game and workout, Synth Riders, because this game has changed my life for the better in countless ways.
