We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Chan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
In 2018, I was introduced to the one and only Jen So, CEO and Founder of Campfire Events by my cousin, Karen Chan at a Kate Spade Bridal Event. To say the least, that is where my journey in the event industry started! As an individual whose first job was in retail, I had no idea how events were managed, what vendor relations consisted of, and how much time it truly takes to put an entire production together. Throughout the years of working as an Assistant Coordinator with Jen, I gained an abundant amount of knowledge and experience. Fast forward to 2020, I started doing balloon backdrops for events like baby showers, birthday parties, graduations, etc. and this is when I knew 100% that the event industry is for me. A little over a year or two of doing small gigs on my own, I took some time to reevaluate my small business and where I wanted to be and of course, that was to start EVNTSBYEM and book large scale events.

I learned that starting a business is not easy, let alone managing and creating content to post on social media platforms. The first few months of starting my business, I was looking for ways to promote my services, started my Instagram page and posted a quick introduction, however, I got little to no views. From that point, I questioned what I was doing wrong and feared that my business was not going to be successful. I, then, proceeded to do some research and took a few online marketing courses, watched videos on YouTube, and even looked at how other businesses were posting on their social media to get a feel of what I needed to incorporate into my posts.

Fast forward to 2023, I now have a website https://www.evntsbyem.com, is on WeddingWire, theKnot, Facebook, Yelp, and Instagram. All in all, I learned that being patient, open to learning, and researching is the key to success in growing a business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
EVNTSBYEM is a event coordinating and planning business located in Rosemead, California, offering day-of, partial, and full planning services. I have been part of the events industry since 2018, and was finally able to fulfill my dream of starting my own business in 2021-2022. What sets me apart from others is that I approach each event with a fresh perspective to ensure it’s as unique, special, and reflective of the couple’s personalities as possible. I’m committed to providing each client with the experience of a lifetime, perfectly executing their vision right down to the smallest detail.

What I am most proud of is how much I have grown as an individual in the industry and how much my business has grown over the last year. I am excited to see where my business will take me for the next year or two so I can depart from my full-time job and make my business my main priority.

To give an insight on what I do, here is a list of some services I provide across the packages I offer:

Vendor Referrals
Review of Vendor Contracts
Floor Plan Creation
Decor Setup
Vendor Relations/Coordination
Budget Analysis
Timeline Creation
Fun Fact: I am a preferred vendor at The Fifth – Anaheim, CA and at Alexandria Ballrooms – Los Angeles, CA!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Hands down, my parents and sister deserve credit and recognition! My parents and sister have supported me in so many ways and there are not enough words to express how grateful I am to have them in my life. My parents always encouraged me to take on any opportunity I was given so that I can grow to know a “little of everything”. My parents have always told me “do what you like to do, if you don’t like it then find something else, you are not a failure” and that is exactly what I did. From all the opportunities I have taken, I eventually found my groove. They will forever be my backbone.

My fiance, Tony, also deserves some recognition! He has always been supportive, loving, and understanding in anything and everything I wanted to do since day one. When I told him about wanting to start my own business, he was all for it and started to help me in any way he could to get things moving. Being the supportive partner he is, he even decided to join me in working events I book and I can’t be more grateful for him. Without the encouragement he has given me over the years, EVNTSBYEM would not have become a thing. Aside from the business, Tony is my shoulder to cry on, my purpose, and the person that encourages me to unplug from work (knowing how much of a workaholic I am) and enjoy life when I can even if it means laying in bed. He compliments me in ways that no other can and there are not enough words to describe the love I have for this man!

Lastly, my best friend who has stuck by my side through thick and thin!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Phin Smith – Garden Grove, CA: A coffee shop in Orange County that I personally believe has the best coffee! I will make a trip to Garden Grove just to get my morning coffee here and there. My personal favorite is their Lavender Latte! Gem Dining – Fountain Valley, CA: An asian fusion restaurant that has a unique menu. Each plate is plated nicely and is super delicious!
The Great Balloon Park – Irvine, CA: The world’s largest tethered helium balloon! If you are not a fan of heights, this park also has basketball courts, softball, baseball, soccer fields and a walking trail!
Disneyland – Anaheim, CA: Disneyland is my second home and I go there once a month or twice a month as a form of stress relief. The one thing I always do when going to the parks is ride The Little Mermaid and get my favorite snack, Hot Link Corn Dog from Corn Dog Castle!
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, CA: Dodger fan or not, you must take them to visit the Dodger Stadium as it has changed a lot over the years! There is now a Pavilion with tons of new food options unlike other stadiums I have been to before. Enjoy a Dodger Dog or two with a cold beer!
Hollywood Walk of Fame – Hollywood, CA: The most touristy location in Los Angeles!
Funko Hollywood – Hollywood, CA: A store filled with pop culture collectibles, toys, and accessories! There are tons of photo opportunities throughout the store and is almost like an amusement park, except it does not have any rides. They even give you the option to “Pop Yourself” – create a Funko Pop to look just like you!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is dedicated to my family, my fiance Tony, Jen So, and lastly my best friend Christy.
