We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I find risks exciting & consider them opportunities to level up in life. I’ve risked stability, peace of mind and consistency in this journey of starting a business, which have all paid off tremendously. Sometimes taking a risk and landing successfully is the kind of growth spurt needed to evolve into the kind of person you want to become. You have to leave the fears behind you, believe in yourself and do whatever is necessary to avoid failure.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Floriconvento prides itself on designing in a way that allows every single flower & branch to shine. I like to think that I am interpreting the story that the flowers want to tell, I wield the flowers with care and listen to their movements to work with the flowers in a way that seems natural & intuitive. At the same time, I love combining flashy & showy elements to create unexpected textures, shapes and silhouettes. I love being inventive and putting together combinations of florals that normally would not be expected to create beauty. It took me many years of trial and error before I become comfortable and confident with my design skills. I spent many years in the beginning learning as much as I could about flowers, the industry and the administrative end of the flower world, all the while saving photos of arrangements that I loved and keeping a moodboard of styles I wanted to emulate. Once I began designing under another florist who had a very liberal style, allowed for creativity and individuality, I really was able to hone in on my style and figure out how to make my visions come to life. I spent over 3 years working for other florists, day in and day out, just familiarizing myself with florals and learning as many techniques as I could. Persistence is key in sculpting yourself in to the kind of designer you want to be. You cant lose sight of the vision and you have to listen to your gut.
I want the world to know that I truly look at each arrangement as an opportunity to make art. A lot of florists are pressured to work in a way thats safe financially, but I refuse to forfeit the excitement I get from working with an exotic, fleeting or rare flower over making better profits. Life is too short and money doesn’t solve every problem. Sometimes looking at something stunning is necessary. So, I’d want to be remembered as an artist who put all of her heart & soul into creating stunning works of botanical art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my best friend comes into town, I want to show her the best of the best; the best places to eat, the best places dance & have fun, but also show her the cute little spots where a New Yorker like me can escape & find peace, to balance out the fast paced nature of this bustling city. We start the day in Harlem, where I’m based, and take a stroll through the neighborhood looking for smoothies and matcha lattes. I like Rooted and The Monkey Cup in South Harlem. After that, we might take a late morning pilates class at Harlem Pilates, then take a detour through Morningside park to get home and change before setting off on another adventure. We’ll meander through some thrift stores like Buffalo Exchange or 2nd Street in midtown before resting our heels on riverside park to watch the sunset with a cooler, a blanket to lay on and my german shepard Rocky for company. After that, we’ll go home, have some homecooked dinner, followed by a shot or two of Brugal because at this point we are pregaming for a night of dancing. Depending on the mood, we’ll either go uptown to Dykman street to see whats up with the local dominicans. Otherwise we’ll check out a lowkey puerto rican spot in Williamsburg called Tonitos or the Carribean Social Club. I love showing people how despite moving to a new city, you can always find pieces of your culture to surround yourself with.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people who’ve played instrumental roles in helping me get where I am today. My family has been incredibly supportive; from allowing me to stay on their couches when I first moved to New York City, to volunteering themselves to help me get projects done, to advocating for me in room with established people they know – without them I’d be leagues behind, i’m sure. They made me feel comfortable in riding their coat tails, they wanted me to do well and offered as much help as they could to make sure that I was getting the attention of the right kinds of people. Specifically my mother, who supported me through college as I went back & forth between part-time jobs and the fledgling version of Floriconvento that existed in 2016. My older sister & brother, both involved in the fashion industry, they made sure to send my flowers to people they know loved & appreciated design, and recommended my services to people who they knew working behind the scenes of the glamorous fashion industry. Without them It would have taken me a long time to gather some of my clients.
