We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Wong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, what’s your definition for success?
The definition of success has changed so many times for me over the years.
It was first to be “successful” at being a photographer. Which meant I could make some side income from doing it. Then it morphed into livable income. Now, I see it as having more flexibility or living life in my own terms. Having more freedom of choice over my own schedule, projects, and living life in a way that is authentic to me and my own values, not just a monetary goal.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a brand photographer based who helps women entrepreneurs who have a service based business in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Brand sessions are really creatively inspiring to me because they can incorporate a ton of different photography styles. I’m really drawn to people doing things that inspire them, so it’s a joy to do sessions that highlight people, their work, and energy the give off doing their service to others.
It took a few years to figure out something that I was interested in shooting, and finding the right market and marketing for it. It wasn’t easy but you keep moving yourself forward. You keep looking for sparks or glimmers of light that help guide you along the way. You trust yourself and the process that it’ll take you where you want to go if you keep following the clues.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Visit Japantown, go to Jina Bakes (https://www.jinabakes.com/) then visit Maido Fine Stationary. Take yourself to Golden Gate Park. You can go to the Japanese Gardens, De Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, or Conservatory of Flowers.
Beach Day – Go to Outerlands for breakfast, wander into General Store a few doors down, wander the Great Highway people watching. Bring layers because we’re not SoCal. Get a Trouble Coffee, also on the same block if you need to be warmed from the inside out.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s too many people to name. A big reason why I’m drawn to the creative community is because of the genuine people I’ve met that have acknowledged that their success was in part by building relationships and helping others. And continuing to pay that forward for others.
