We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmeka Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emmeka, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is the cheat code to life ! When you take risks you tell yourself that you are capable of doing anything, even if you don’t see a clear path of how.

Becoming a risk taker has done so many amazing things in my life. Taking a chance on life was something that I did when I created my brand. I was nervous to step out of my comfort zone because I always thought that there is going to be someone better than me. But in the end, the risk that I took opened up doors I didn’t even know existed.

Even though I still struggle to bring myself out of my comfort zone I always look back on how much I have accomplished so far and remember that the sky & beyond is the only limit that I have.

I say that risk taking is a cheat code, because I believe that we are capable of making our own realities within our reality. We have the ultimate decision to change the way that we want our life to go, learning that and owning that is the only way you will be successful.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a program coordinator for a girls mentoring group in Iowa. I introduce them into exciting parts of the community and allow them to have opportunities that they may not have had without our program. Our program focuses on girls of color who live in a rural community and want to be a part of a sisterhood.

I started my hair page with the girls I mentor in mind, I want to influence girls and individuals who have the same issues with me regarding their hair, regarding their confidence, and I want to be that person who encourages them to be their best self everyday.

I have had some of my girls that I mentor tell me that they see my videos and that they relate to them, and they learned from them, and that is one of my ultimate goals that I had when I started my brand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live very very close to a big 10 college campus and it is the cities pride and joy.

I will take my best friend on a trip through the town, showing them all of my favorite spots to eat, all of my favorite spots to party and introducing them to all of my near and dear friends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out the wonderful community that I have had the pleasure to be a part of.

The beauty and hair creator community has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, believe in myself and make new friends along the way. Every day I meet beautiful creative individuals who inspire me to be my best self.

I have gained so much confidence & love in the past two years from people I have never met in person and I think that is so beautiful. I will continue to do what I love and encourage others to do the same.
