We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika “Amerika” Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erika “Amerika”, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because both allow me to use my God-given skills and talent to fulfill my purpose in life. I’ve never felt more fulfilled at any other time. Being a creative and showcasing my skills through the images, words, and videos I create is not something I take lightly. I do everything with purpose and with God at the center of it. I know that whatever I choose to show the world is meant to inspire and inform, not just entertain. A lot of time people see others operating in their “zone of genius” and don’t think that they can or they just don’t know how. My advice is to think about what it is that makes you truly, genuinely happy. Find that thing and do it. It might be more than one thing. Everyone’s art and creativity is unique to them. Someone’s art may be provided by a service based business. They have a way with words and are able to teach someone how to do something. Another person’s art may be creating with their hands (artist, jewelry maker, etc.) They have a way with bringing their vision to life through a product.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Amerika B. Style Me is a digital fashion and brand styling company that helps millennial women of color define their style, create their image, and build their brand. My mission is to inspire women to have the confidence and freedom to be their most authentic selves. The goal is to help you look and feel your best by helping you gain confidence, mental clarity, and self-worth through your attitude and personal style. It took a while for me to get to where I am professionally because I needed to get clear on the services that I provided to my clients. It was definitely not easy. I got stuck, had to shift, level up, push through, and learn to pivot. I struggled from time to time because I denied certain gift due to laziness, as well as tried to ignore exactly what I was supposed to be doing. The one lesson I’ve learned is that no matter how much someone may root for you or believe in you, you must always believe in and root for yourself. Always. That’s how people know you are genuine about your craft.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Meetings or Place to Work- Circle House Coffee Brunch with Family or Friends- Morgan’s Restaurant Dinner with Music and a Great Ambiance- Red Rooster Artsy Vibe to Hangout and Have Drinks- Wynwood Area
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God of course deserves all of the glory, credit, and recognition for the fact that I even have a gift or purpose to share with the world. and still have the ability to talk about it. I wouldn’t be where I am without my family and close friends. They always support me and encourage me in the best way that they know how.
