We had the good fortune of connecting with Ernesto Zapata Urrutiabeascoa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ernesto, what medium and what materials do you use to carry out your work?
For this, I mainly use sculpture, since, due to my work background, I see the composition and dimensioning of a work in a different way when sculpting it than when painting it, although I do not rule out the latter medium in some of the representations.
Due to my experience with materials as an engineer, I use lightweight materials such as extruded polystyrene, plaster or aluminum. It is in the use of color where I disagree the most with the usual art, liking the use of metallic or neon colors, colors with the brilliance of the 21st century, considering that colors have to evolve along with civilization.
What is your current line of work?
My current line of reflection is aimed at highlighting the involutions of the human being; why we continue to ask ourselves about women’s rights, why we continue to deforest and pollute disproportionately.
In addition to studying the changes of light or space with shapes, of course!
Do you have a budget?
I don’t have a budget, I work as if I had a hobby and I use the money I need at all times.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started 6 years ago, one boring night I wanted to do something different, something new. And I thought of making a sculpture that would represent something, an emotion, a concept, an idea in another way. My artworks try to be different from everything that has been done so far, in color, in shape, in texture.
Trying to create a different form of beauty. When people see it, they exclaim WOW (wonderful, Original, Wordless).
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would like to visit the north of Spain, the Basque Country, its mountains, its sea, feed on the air and the landscape. Learn from the people who frequent the bars; try their tapas and their wines.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family supports me and gives me freedom to do what I want.
