We had the good fortune of connecting with Errin Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Errin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, I was working at a fast food joint and I no longer enjoyed working there. I was working in fast food from 2016 up to 2020. I felt as if I grew beyond the job and just was tired of working there, and I eventually developed the mindset of wanting to become my own boss. It got to the point where I was dreading coming to work daily and since I was a shift leader, my crew already knew to be on point throughout the shift so we can get in and out. I was also in my senior year of college at the time, so juggling school and working in an environment I no longer enjoyed eventually took a toll on me from time to time. Plus the pandemic hit as graduation was getting closer for me and working remotely was a new experience that I kind of enjoyed, I honestly liked being at home and working. I just knew i could be doing something than flipping burgers and dropping fries in grease. While the thoughts of being a boss babe were running through my mind, in 2019 I expressed to a “sister” at the time about how i wanted to start my own business and be my own boss. I didn’t fully know what I wanted to start at that moment but I just knew i was ready to be out of fast food!! Long story short, she laughed at me and didn’t take me serious, and that was the line for me. If i wasn’t sure on starting a business then, I was definitely determined to start a business afterwards. I was ready for something new and something different, so for the time being I applied for another job to keep the funds rolling. The job I applied to had an office setting, which was out of the ordinary for me (since I’ve only worked in fast food), but in December of 2020 I landed the position. As far as business, from the summer of 2019 for about a year, I did a lot of research and behind the scenes work in regard to my business. Day in and day out, I was watching youtube videos, reading articles, all sorts of things just to educate myself on what I was getting into. Finally, in September of 2020, my first business went live and in January of this year I decided to step my game up in the hair industry. Now in the present, it’s still a journey I pride myself on. I’m flourishing in some aspects and still growing in others as an entrepreneur and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me. I am also the first in my family to start a business, which is something I am proud of.
What should our readers know about your business?
I run two businesses: Savagee Beauty LLC and StyleddBy.E
Savagee Beauty LLC is my very first business, which launched in 2020. SB LLC is shifting into the direction of loungewear. I started with hair accessories like the diamond headbands, hair pins, and the fluffy headbands. At first I had customers buying multiple headbands and hairpins at a time. But once they went out of style, they literally went out of style, so eventually I was stuck with a few pieces of inventory. In that time I learned to be weary of what’s trending because what may work for one business may not work for the next. Eventually I shifted to loungewear since that was something I was actually interested in. I purchased 3 outfit pieces for inventory and released the lounge collection in April of this year and participated in my very first popup shop in Tallahassee, FL in May. At the popup shop I made a lot of sales and many purchased loungewear from me. In that moment it opened my eyes to the many possibilities I had involving my brand. As of right now, I am in the rebranding process for Savagee Beauty LLC. I want my business to be known for lounge wear and for being a brand that provides quality and comfortable clothing. I want my brand to be known for the clothing that all women can wear according to their mood, and still feel like they’re slaying the game.
Styleddby.E is my second business, which launched early this year. I’ve been doing hair since I was a kid and many recognized my talents early on. I didn’t take it completely serious when I was younger or even while I was in college. While in school, I did hair occasionally since I had to focus classes, at a certain point I was a cheerleader, and eventually I started working. So doing hair while in college wasn’t my main concern. I also did my own hair a lot, which had other ladies inquire about the stylist. Once I graduated, I decided to try it as a side hustle earlier this year by creating an Instagram and launching a booking site for clients book. This was the point where I had to learn patience, because I knew I wasn’t going to book clients immediately. And knowing that means I knew I wasn’t going to make much or come across many new clients. It was killing me a little bit because I wanted to try hairstyles so bad but no one was really interested and I couldn’t try certain styled due to my full time job. Realizing these things set me back a little bit as a hairstylist because I couldn’t really practice. Overtime my booking site was giving me issues and I sporadically switched to a new site. Once I did the switch, clients started rolling in fast. My booking site wasn’t even published for a full hour before I booked my first client, and it honestly shocked me. But once the number of clients I was coming across started increasing, it opened my eyes: Other people are actually seeing my skills. I also created a Tiktok and was using reels for my appointment reveals, which shared my talents with many other people near and far. I learned that all money isn’t good money and that it’s okay to decline if something is off. This is also another case where I had to learn patience, because I want something bad it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time. I had to grow as a stylist in different aspects, and I think that is the most humbling experience of it all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s a lot of spots in Miami that I haven’t checked out yet (it’s so many to choose from lol). But the places that I do think are pretty cool are Wetwillies on South Beach. It’s a lit vibe for a night out in the town, like a girls night or even a night out with friends. Also, Miami Squeeze in North Miami Beach is a nice place. Their food is more on the healthier side with amazing juiced and detox drinks. To hangout, Bayside and Wynwood Art District would be another cool area to visit. It’s useful for a night out or even to do a photoshoot. I think Wynwood is a universal area that has a lot to offer. I personally do not go out much so I still have more of the city to experience myself.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank God for keeping me focused, blessing me with my abilities/talents, and for the multiple future opportunies that are in store for me. Next, I would like to thank my family for going along this journey with me. Thank you all for your opinions, helpful critiques, and endless motivation because being an entrepreneur really does take a lot and without a great support system like you all, the journey could have been a little more challenging. Thank you all for keeping my head on straight when I felt discouraged and for being an ear when I needed to vent. Thank you all for sharing my posts and passing out my flyers in support of my businesses. I love you all so much and can’t wait to celebrate my success with you all when it’s my turn. I would also like to thank my best friend for being there from the beginning as well. Thank you Anna for the countless hours of business talk, being a great business friend, and for providing great advice through this journey as well. Let’s continue the good work with our businesses! Thank you to my friends and supporters for always sharing whenever you see a post by me, without the support of you guys we all can’t grow together as a business. And lastly, thank you to Lanieyah for constantly pushing me. When people looked at me funny for wanting to start my own business, you always reminded me of why I needed to ignore them. Although you’re no longer here, I carry your advice with me as I go along this journey. I really wish you were here to continue to watch me grow and to experience this journey with me, but I know you’re here in spirit. I love you, to the moon and back.
