We had the good fortune of connecting with Eryka Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eryka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I began working in the publishing industry because, when I started my career, there wasn’t much diversity in publishing. Going even further back to my childhood, I didn’t see little girls who looked like me on the covers of children or YA books. The only Main Character Energy I felt was from white people and although I loved the stories all the same, they didn’t impact me quite as much as my peers. I wanted to change that so my children would feel a deeper connection to books and develop the same love of literature that I have.

What should our readers know about your business?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Cleveland, Ohio, you’re going to get some delicious food because we made it in the top 7 on the list of U.S. Cities with the Best Food. So if I were hosting a friend’s stay here, we would venture around to several restaurants that offer delicious dining and beautifully crafted desserts and cocktails. When we weren’t eating, we would be visiting art and history museums, catching live bands, going to a Browns, Guardians, or Cavs game, or just walking down the boardwalk downtown, beside the lake. There’s lots to do here and we love to be outdoors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my mother for instilling a love of reading in me. As a child, I would often see her with a book and I remember her hosting book club meetings in our home. I would like to thank the independent book publisher who took a chance on me as a freelance editor. I had a degree in business, not English. However, due to my love of reading, she gave me the opportunity to join her organization and helped me publish my book of poetry.
I would like to thank my first few clients who pushed me to start my own book publishing and ghostwriting company. Without their patronage and client referrals, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It truly takes a village to catch a dream and my village has been phenomenal.
