We had the good fortune of connecting with Eurice Rojas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eurice, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in New York City in 1958. My family returned to live in Cuba after my birth, where my father was arrested as a political prisoner, and after he was released, we ultimately escaped in 1961 and returned to New York City.
My family’s experience with the political turmoil, and their resilience in creating a new life, in a new country, with nothing, provided a foundation of values that included courage, and determination.
In addition, I was raised in an impoverished, inner-city section of Manhattan where the education I received learning to survive the streets. of New York City contributed significantly to forming my character.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My education resulting from surviving and escaping from the gritty streets of New York provided me with streetwise acumen that proved to be a unique advantage and has paid dividends in my career. I have had the pleasure of having experienced a diverse and rewarding personal, professional and creative career. My life resume includes: Copywriter for an advertising agency; ex professional golfer; international tobacco executive; healthcare executive; entrepreneur; university adjunct professor; consultant; elected politician; father, husband; and author.
Navigating the business, intellectual and political dynamics was challenging. Was it difficult? Hell yes. I was a Hispanic minority striving to excel and overcome ethnic and cultural obstacles that were present in corporate America. But it was fun and taught you how to be resilient, and unrelenting in achieving your goals, And I had a blast overcoming those barriers!
If there is any takeaway, morale, to this story, it would be the inspiration to achieve your goals. Inspiration that overcomes challenges, provides the drive to outlast your opponent’s/competitors, and inspiration that eliminates self-doubt because you will ultimately cross paths with someone who will contribute to your success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have residences in Miami Beach on Collins Avenue, and New Jersey by the Hudson River overlooking NYC. For NYC, it depends on the season. The summer in NYC is much different than its winter. As NYC is considered the cultural mecca of the United States, we would visit museums, go to the theater, and walk around the city to see Iconic landmarks. We would also take advantage of enjoying the many cuisines and libations from the culturally diverse restaurants found in NYC.
When in Miami Beach, we would enjoy the beautiful beach, go deep sea fishing and bone fishing, cruise on another friend’s yacht, visit the Everglades, visit other friends, hang out at rooftop or beachside bars/restaurants, visit Calle Ocho, Wynwood, enjoy the ethnic cuisines and go to other destinations like the Keys.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story, and career has been shaped by good fortune encountering many meaningful mentors. Tabitha Rose from Life to Paper publishing deserves a huge shout out along with editor Jennifer Goulden, and I honor my deceased parents. I would also like to recognize Carlos “Chaz” Acosto, and his Space Camp Studio team for the production of my audiobook. However, as corny as it may sound, my greatest source of inspiration, support, and love is attributed to my wife of thirty-two years – Norma.
