We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn Miranda aka Dreamlyn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evelyn, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I got the idea for my business in 2002 when I was unemployed and pregnant with my second child. Being a high- risk pregnancy, I was placed on full bedrest for nine months and had to leave my job. Being on bedrest and unable to go back to my job as an art teacher, I began to wonder how I could make money from home. It started simply by designing art and painting small artworks from my bed then posting them up for sale on eBay and various sites. Over a course of three years, I sold over a thousand paintings of various styles and genres, ranging from folk art cat, fantasy, and private commissions. The success of these continues sales inspired me to set up my business which I still have today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from many other artists is that I am eclectic. My eclecticism is reflected in the diversity of my themes, styles, and media. The themes in my art have focused on women, fantasy, animals, and dreams. My styles range from folk art, fantasy, spiritual, Renaissance, graphic art, and illustrations. I use what I feel in the day to create with oils, acrylic, pastels, inks, watercolor, digital. One day, I will be creating fantasy artwork in oils, next I can be illustrating a children’s book in digital media. I like to change what I do all the time. Presently I am designing characters for a novel I am writing. Being an eclectic artist has had its challenges. Many galleries will only represent artists that paint the same themes and styles. I didn’t want to be tied down to just doing landscapes in oils or be an abstract artist that did only mix media. I wanted my freedom to create and execute my art in diverse ways. I overcame this challenge by exhibiting in public places, such as libraries and government buildings, and the use of the internet and social media.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting South Florida, I would create an itinerary that would include the local art scene, independent bookstores, and Mediterranean cuisine. We’d start our tour of the local art scene at Wynwood, a section of Miami filled with art galleries exhibiting local independent artists, then the Perez Museum, Miami’s latest modern art venue. We would also go to Vizcaya, an Italian Renaissance styled villa, built in 1915 by Industrialist James Deering. We’d also go to Books & Books, a local independent store, with an amazing collection of diverse books. We would cap off our day by dining at a local Mediterranean restaurant like Santorini by Georgios, a Greek restaurant on South Beach, which features live entertainment like belly dancing and live music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to my family, beginning with my sister Elizabeth Kapadia who has been a strong force in encouragement with my creative endeavors. My husband and children who have always been there for me in my creations with endless love and support. My Mom and Dad who are no longer with me started my creative life. My mother was my beacon of hope and determination in my art. Lastly, I would like to make a shout out to all my patrons and followers who have supported my art and made it possible for me to live as a full-time creative artist.
