We had the good fortune of connecting with Everton Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Everton, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor to my success would be the ability to grow it organically. Organically, meaning limited money or support. Growing a brand organically allowed me to cultivate my ideas from things I already know or was taught to me during my upbringing. I never knew all the qualities for running a business lied dormant inside of me, placed there from the shared up bringing from my parents, grandparents, and cultural environment.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a Restaurant/ bar nested outside the Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. My journey here was a long one, I started the restaurant at 26 with very limited resources in the back of a gas station/ liquor store. Through quality and consistency I was able to develop the restaurant into a new location one year later. I learned that Once running a business leadership must be identified in one self. If it’s not recognized , one should educate oneself or seek leadership elsewhere. The service industry is effected by society due to it being viewed as a low paying job and, with no room for entitlement. In order to convince the young generation that serving someone isn’t beneath them takes inspiration and rolling up your sleeves. Culture comes from history. If you’re not proud of your history you won’t have anything to offer the future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to my restaurant. My pride myself on stimulating all 6 senses. eyes, smell, touch, sound, taste, and psych. Kitchen in the desert incapsualtes these senses into our hosting ideology.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When the body says no by Gabor mate. Changed my life and helped me to attack my trauma from childhood. This helped me to have the confidence to go in to business alone
