Meet Fabio Barros | Art Director and Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Fabio Barros and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fabio, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Brazil is a tropical country with big artistic influence based in Carnival. Colorful colors are my roots identity and I use to add this in my artwork work, everything with colors brings happiness to people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think each individual is different, and this make us unique, with unique point of views and style with a different story to tell in a blank page. My path was very difficulty, I think the biggest challenge was to proof to people how I was always interested to learn in the beginning. I was far way to be the best creative / illustrator, but I was the first in line to say to people how I was interested to learn, but unfortunately only will didn’t help me and I needed to proof to everyone that I could be good on my disciplines. I started to study more about art in general and practice on my own, literally one drawing per day in my free time.
I think persistence and the “believing in myself” was the key to my carrear, 7 years ago I didn’t speak english and accepted a job offer in Qatar and was very hard for me, I moved there on my own, different culture and with very limited communication to translate my ideas. One year after that I had an opportunity to go to Dubai, this time with a better english and I could communicate better, and was happen my first international award in advertising, a gold in Dubai Lynx. This was a game change to my career and gave an opportunity for me to have my first work in US. After 3 years in USA I got more 144 international awards.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Long Island City, and I love my neighborhood. Always I recommend the waterfront sidewalk. Drink a beer, sitting in front of Hudson watching to Manhattan landscape its one of the best experience in NYC without to be in Manhattan, that place clears my mind. I love pubs and one that I recommend is Gantry Bar in Long Island City too, the Buffalo Chicken Wings its superb.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always loved comic books and Stan Lee creations always took my attention, but his partner Jack Kirby was my big inspiration for my illustrations. These two guys built my persona when I was a teenager with a dream about to be a creative and an artist.
