We had the good fortune of connecting with Fanni Sarkozy multi award-winning pianist, singer and composer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fanni, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I would say, music chose me as an instrument to be a channel to “broadcast” that eternal beauty, and harmony to people’s lives. I never thought the opposite way. Whenever I compose, I have this very certain feeling that I’m like an antenna, receiving information from somewhere, and through my hands and brain it starts to exist in the perceptible world, our 3D. People often call it God. I would rather call it higher power, or the Big Director of all things, big and small around us.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wise man say that the journey is even more important than the destination. My path is definitely more than strange and unusual, and still not finished. I was a pioneer in my family of classical musicians, performers, teachers and composers. I was about 11 years old when I my Mom bought me a radio, it was in 1992. Yeah, now you know how old I am! 🙂 That radio changed my life. I’m a classically trained concert pianist. That’s what my master degree says at least. In 1992, when Hungary was just about to establish democracy after so many decades of communism, we still had so little information about the “outer world”.. All I remember is that I heard a fascinating broadcast of a jazz show happening in the U.S. It was a late night show, I still remember because my mom wouldn’t allow me to stay up late, but I did it anyways. Hearing those performers sounding so great and new, gave me something I will never ever forget. It was love… When you fall in love, that was the same exact feeling I had. I was just sitting on my bed with this new feeling of excitement for.. freedom? Yes, it’s probably the best way to describe it.
I started to record these broadcasts on tape. For years and years I kept recording everything and anything I liked from the radio. It didn’t really matter what it was, I pressed the button whenever something captured my attention. I still have like 200 of tapes in my apartment in Budapest. And started to make experiments with chords and melodies no one taught me before. Merging styles, I slowly became a “hybrid”. I used everything what I heard and made me excited.
So without planning, or deciding anything I was on a different path already. Everything I do now and make a living of is based on that freedom I experienced in my old bedroom late night in 1992.
Since that I compose and perform stuff I like. I can’t do it otherwise, all music I compose I must adore first, then I show it to people.
Looking back the most important message seems to be true to the mission you’ve given . Because there is one for everyone. There is a certain call you feel in your heart. There is a moment when you just realize THIS IS IT! Can happen in any phase of life. It can happen anytime. That’s the most beautiful thing about it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami is a town of fun and entertainment. I would definitely invite them to a delicious salsa class at Planeta Dance Company. It’s a fabulous group of enthusiasts teaching people of any age and level. I’m a student myself and I enjoy their sessions so much! To eat, I would invite them to a small gem, called Kinoko Sushi and Thai Restaurant. We owned the place for three years, and the new owners kept it’s profile and quality. Great place to hang out with friends and family!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many great people in my life I’m grateful for. My family, Mom and my Aunt whose always on my side, and my chosen family: my friends. I have really great, supportive and cool friends. I often say that the biggest gift what you can give to someone is your time and attention. The people I’m surrounded by are the ones who like to share wisdom and experience, and who are also able to listen. We always have a conversation with each other, not a monologue. Also my dog, Bobby. Might sound hilarious, but he taught me so much about patience, love and understanding!
My favorite philosophers, Eckhardt Tolle and Allen Watts I learned so much from.. But the list is basically endless. I even got support from nature, and strangers.
