We had the good fortune of connecting with Felipe Correa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Felipe, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have always gone for the long shot in my career choices. Growth happens at the edges and to take that risk, even if it’s a little one, can help one grow regardless of the outcome. I believe that one can win life if willing to take a leap.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a photographer. I may be in the most saturated field of art there is. Anyone with an Iphone is in a way parallel to the next “Ansel Adams” according to the metrics of pop culture in social media. My angles set me apart though. I often risk equipment, limb, life to get that special shot. I am particularly proud of my alligator close-ups. I love getting a glimpse of their beautiful essence, love how my images help people change their minds about the nature of this hard-faced apex predator. Photography Reveals. I’ve learned the greatest lessons about life in the exploration of this medium, especially how to pay a kind of ferocious attention. It is really great to see the Beauty of this world, I love to show off that essential skill and love to teach it to those willing to reconnect with their wild roots.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a seasoned Florida tour guide, I am lucky to know so much of South Florida! I would definitely treat my best friend to an exploration of the Everglades and the Florida Keys. We’d go from fresh water to salt water, and all the nuanced sights, sounds, flavors from the changing environment. I’d start the trip with a big airboat ride in the Miccosukee reservation with the Great Betty Osceola of Buffalo Tiger’s. A Keeper of the Everglades to teach us the Everglades for the day! Then I’d spend the night in Florida City to rest and eat some of the best Mexican food there is and be ready to explore the Everglades National Park. Sights include the Long Pine Pond, Anhinga Trail, and a long visit to Flamingo. From there, we go to Islamorada, time to add art to the trip. Gallery hopping, brewery hoping, Florida Bay, Atlantic Ocean, tarpon feeding, and the best ever Happy Hour! It’s off to Marathon. Florida development history time at the Seven Mile Bridge and Pigeon Key. Long visit to the local fisheries so we don’t have a failure of strength 🙂 Key West time now. Enjoy all of it from the shenanigans and the serious. The people are the best attraction!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I credit the art of poetry for helping me learn and understand the Nature of Life. Gwendolyn Brooks said: “Poetry is life distilled”. That brief and elegant sentence planted a tiny seed that sprouted into a voracious desire to hear the language of life. The voice of Mary Oliver taught me to pay fierce attention. Wendell Berry taught me deep reverence for Nature and my fellow beings. Jimmy Santiago Baca teaches me resilience and endurance. Poetry is a kind of “constituent art”, I count on it to help me add depth and purpose to my photos. My art is immeasurably influenced by language.
