We had the good fortune of connecting with Ferdi Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ferdi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve wanted to do something with video games for a while. I spend so much time on them, whether it’s playing games or consuming news about upcoming video games.
In 2020, I created this site/blog as a way to share my love for all things gaming. It all started with short opinion pieces and weekly gaming highlights. Over the past three years I have continuously added new content to the site. I’ve interviewed game developers and others around the gaming scene. I’ve reviewed and previewed countless games. I’ve attended live and online gaming events. I now have a few recurring series (including one on “gaming books”).
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
With myVGBC.com I started off a bit too heavy, with 3-5 posts each week. I’m a team of one. Lately, my focus has been on creating 1-2 more meaningful posts weekly. I’m trying to build my voice and keep my content unique to me. Instead of trying to review every aspect of a video game like a bigger site would do, I’m trying to find some unique point of view on games and go with that.
My goal is to turn this site into something bigger, but for now I’m still in the process of finding my voice and building a better schedule.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Miami, FL. When it comes to gaming, a local gaming-themed place might be Arcade Odyssey. I have still yet to visit there, but I hope to go soon.
If someone was coming to visit and I was casted in an improv show that weekend, I would definitely take them to Just the Funny Improv Comedy to watch my friends and I put on an improv show.
When it comes to food and drinks, I think it would depend on the person. If a non-Cuban, who has never been to Miami was coming into town I would probably have to take them to eat some Cuban food at Sergios, Versailles, or Havana Harrys. If one of my friends who grew up in Miami, but has moved away came to visit I would probably take them to get some Salty Donuts, to our favorite pizza place DC Pie Co.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, my friend Nero Negron who shouted me out for this series. He’s my unofficial myVGBC teammate who I’m always asking for advice. Since he’s a streamer and I’m more of a site/content creator I’m always looking for ways for us to collaborate, work together, or help each other out.
I was inspired by the people and channels where I normally consume my video game info: IGN, Kinda Funny, Greg Miller (KF), Blessing Adeoye Jr (KF), Tim Gettys (KF), Seth Macy (IGN), Danny Pena (GamerTagRadio), Brian Altano (IGN), Rebekah Valentine (IGN), Nicole Carpenter (Polygon) and so many others
There are also people like me who have created their own sites/blogs that I look up to: Mike Towndrow (Six One Indie), my friends at Busch League Gaming, and everyone in games PR who has given me a chance to cover their games.
I also am inspired by my friends in the improv community, who are also creating their own podcasts and content: LD Madera (Improv & Magic Podcast), Anthony Francis (Improv U/Other Than Improv Podcast).
