We had the good fortune of connecting with Fernanda Alvarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fernanda, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I’ve been in the food industry for 15+ years and this year I discovered the magic behind empowering each other. As a latina and business owner I have a bug challenge ahead. First, because I decided to have a plant-based business in a country that is not my hometown. I’ve come to realize that I am being part of the change and this needs to be empowered and powerful to others in the same movement. I am also a huge community empowerer. That all started when I found my place in this country after 7 years of living here. Big part of that was having my business (Manna Life Food, Miami & Cooking Classes by La Healthy Mexicana). I am a huge advocate for latinxs making it outside their countries and those who are changing the world “una planta at a time” just like me, therefore, when one grows, we all grow.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve come a long way… Started back in Mexico City and moved to Miami following a personal dream. As a creative I decided to give a try and start all over again By reinventing myself over and over again. Feel very proud for accomplishing my goal of teaching people how to live healthier lives, from having my own cooking segments in national TV to owning a restaurant, developing menus for different projects and leading some others in Mexico & USA. I am part of the change and it takes a lot of courage, strength and passion to keep up a unique journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start having Lunch at Manna Life Food and taking an açai bowl to Haulover Dog Beach. I’d take her to the Monday sushi night at Planta and Taco Tuesday at Charlys. I’d definitely would have drinks at Casa Florida followed by the Microtheater. Saturday I’ll go to the Farmers Market to buy some veggies and superfoods and have a baked tofu salad with a spinach pie and a carrot & ginger juice at The Last Carrot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
