We had the good fortune of connecting with Frank Yang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Frank, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I started playing the violin and piano and making visual arts when I was 5 and majored in music and film in college At 17 I began bodybuilding and reading philosophy after realizing the necessity of having both mental and physical aesthetics for self-transcendence.
All those different creative and intellectual pursuits ultimately led to meditation, which connects the body, mind, and the universe into one unified fabric.
Everything I engage in is merely different ways to explore, expand, and understand the nature of Reality and how the mind works.
And I think the desire to enter altered states of consciousness is as innate as the desire for food and sex.
To constantly upgrade our brains, the most complex system in the known universe was how our ancestors survived in order to outsmart other species. This inclination evolves into art, philosophy, science, and spirituality.
So I am simply following the natural inclination of what it means to be human.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art can be described as an interdisciplinary stream of consciousness.
I have been documenting my life with a video camera and making vlogs before the internet was invented. My work evolved into performance art when I combined classical music with bodybuilding, installation with painting, photography, and sculpture.
Since I find the moving image to be the closest representation of how the mind constructs Reality, I use filmmaking to weave all the different mediums together into a seamless whole
As I started my spiritual journey, I began documenting my rigorous meditation practices, recording myself going on long silent retreats and the break throughs and insights I experienced in real-time.
Some of the visuals I create with the 360 camera are a means to “transmit” the perceptual shifts in moment-to-moment experience as a result of my practice to the viewer.
Turning my passions into a career as a videographer and coach wasn’t difficult at all. I love making people look beautiful and authentic while inseminating their brains to reach higher planes of consciousness.
I often use terms like “Contemplative Fitness” and “Spiritual Athletics” to describe my mental and physical coaching service. I encourage my clients to become “Infinite Brahs” by shredding away every particle in their body and mind from solidity to liquid to air to transcend the separated ego state so the universe can f*ck itself raw without condoms.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would give them a ride on the scooter around Brickell center. Then to the Wynwood art district.
Downtown Miami is one of the most futuristic and aesthetic places I’ve been to. There is something about the air and energy there. The whole place feels like a Virtual Reality; a pristine and luminous bubble within bubbles. Strolling around downtown feels like you are floating in a boundless and timeless shapeshifting hologram.
It feels like you are indoors even when you are outside. A perfect mixture of stillness and chaos, Nirvana and Samsara, substance and form. The way the architecture is arranged makes your mind very spacious and panoramic, and you can taste the vibrancy with your brain.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If you are interested in meditation, creativity, and consciousness work, Science Of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young and Mastering The Core Teachings Of The Buddha by Daniel Ingram are a must read. These two books demystify spiritual enlightenment and inspire many seekers in the modern world to end their personal suffering by attaining Nirvana. They combine modern science with ancient wisdom traditions to create practices, techniques, and maps that allow everyone to access states of consciousness yogis and sages have been talking about for thousands of years.
Regardless of what career path you choose to follow, it is every human’s birthright to find out what we truly are at the core of our Being.
