We had the good fortune of connecting with Frankie Midnight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Frankie, what do you want people to remember about you?
Authenticity. Insanely creative. Resilient. Inspiring. Everything that i’ve ever done throughout my life was from my heart; visions that I genuinely cared to put my energy and spirit into. From “Love Stories” when I was on that bus stop to “Look Up!!” when i’m in my zombified, insomniac state, reflecting on my faith and hypocrisy. I have to be authentic in everything that I do because I was given the gift of vision and creativity. I must have faith in myself to complete the creative tasks as well as faith that the work will make a positive connection with someone once it’s released out into the world. That’s where my resilience come in because I can’t stop. I tried real estate, worked at various odd jobs from a law firm mailroom to a dog race track yet I always come back to the arts because that is where my heart dwells. The most important aspect of my legacy is that my work inspired those it connected with. My work has to be felt, has to be real, has to be honest to the point that it inspires enthusiasm, strong faith, and creativity in others. I strongly believe every human being was put here to inspire others in positive crossfire and this is what my legacy will reflect.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a recording, performing, and creative artist of music, stage, and screen! To be more specific, I’m a singer, songwriter, composer, producer, story writer, and cinematographer. I’m also a multi-musician of guitar, bass, piano, drums/ percussion, harmonica, and vocals. I’ve recently completed and released over 12 music videos, all filmed on my friggen’ phone! I’m extremely proud of this achievement because my creativity has pushed my limits and the quality of the work has exceeded my initial expectations when filming. What sets me apart from my professional peers are my teachers and inspiration which plays a huge role in the development of my works. I listen to all kind of music from David Bowie to 2pac Shakur, too many to name. Same with films, Dario Argento, Stanley Kubrick, Spike Lee, too many to name! Somehow, i’ve managed to retain a part of my childhood which I believe keeps my work pure in essence. One of the challenges I face in my field is touring and performing. Dut to the pandemic, live shows may never be the same which sucks because live shows are the primary bread and butter for performing artists. In this problem, my solution is to expand my mediums for connecting my music with my supporters through innovative channels. In the end of it all, I want to be remembered for my artistic authenticity and unique perspective when approaching music, film, and performance in hopes that others will be inspired to engage in their ideas be it positive and motivational for others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Nowadays, there ain’t much going out however, we’d still have a swell time: Monday – Grab brunch in Overtown and later, tune into Mor Music Mondays with Ale More on Instagram. Tuesday – Beach it up (Miami of course) and later, tune into Creatively Undistanced Open with Quiana Major and Alexa Lash. Wednesday – Tune in to The Indie Seat for insightful Miami artists interviews as well as Mango Sessions and El Jam for amazing music performances by some of miami’s most talented music artists. Thursday – Hit up the Hippie Haven a 8pm for some awesome live music. Friday / Saturday – Check out some Alt. B live music performances in downtown E. Flagler street by the Olympia Theater. Sunday – Sleep In 🙂 Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I must give a shoutout to my mother and father, Jameil and Cory, for not only producing me but loving me as best as they knew how. I didn’t grow up in a household with both my parents; they were never married however, they always remained a close friendship which resulted in me having them both in my life and upbringing. I’m thankful for their understanding of my choices as well as their love for music which was clearly passed down to me. My father’s realness and my mother’s open mindedness are qualities which I have and cherish because these traits contribute towards my strengths.
