We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabbee Dickinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabbee, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To be honest, I was never a risk taker. I’m a Taurus and those who know about Astrology know, we like our stability and comforts. So although I am spontaneous in nature, risks don’t come easy to me. All of that changed after I lost 4 loved ones last year. I took a good hard look at my life and accomplishments. While I was proud of my 2 degrees, and of myself for buying a house by 23, and having a great paying 9-5 job, I would say to myself and my partner at least once a week, “This can’t be it. This can not be what all that hard work was for, no way I just do this everyday looking forward to the 1-2 vacations a year until the end.” Needless to say, all the loss in such a short time really had an effect on me and my perspective on life.  My partner saw this, heard my fears, and suggested that I pick my photography back up. He said I’m really talented at it, and it’s something to make me happy. He challenged me to start out doing anything related to photography for 30 minutes everyday. It took about 2 days and I was hooked again. Within a month I already had a logo, email set up, was offering photo shoots to build my portfolio. Stepping out of my comfort zone and putting myself out there was risky for me, but I decided I’d rather get comfortable with the risks then risk my whole life by settling for a life I wasn’t happy with for comfort. My greatest fear is that one day when I am old I will wake up and wonder what if.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a photographer. I am a creative at heart, in kindergarten I wanted to be an Art teacher because that was my favorite subject. I started taking photos as a hobby 8 years ago, I have always loved photos— photos of things, places, people. For me photographs are like songs or smells that bring you back to a familiar memory. But they also allow for new perspective as well. I started out shooting Landscape and Macro, but I’ve realized I prefer to photograph people. There is something about the social interaction during a shoot, and the excitement of clients receiving their photos and seeing the beauty the world sees everyday. Those moments are magic for me. I believe what sets me apart is my desire to make the experience fun and natural for clients. Trust me when I say the end result shows when someone is having fun versus when they are uncomfortable or insecure. It’s my job to get the real laugh to capture the magical moments.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First of all, I would prepare my best friend for the week they were in for. I’m one of those people who jam pack vacation intineraries. I know we would definitely take a quick train ride to NYC for at least a couple days and explore the city, doing concrete jungle photoshoots obviously! We may take a quick day trip to Philadelphia to visit Eastern State Penitentiary (some of the most interesting architecture I’ve ever seen or photographed). We would have to stop into the Pharmacy steakhouse in Goshen, NY for their fun cocktails and delicious food. While in the local Hudson Valley, I assume it is fall because it’s the best time of year to visit. We would have to spend the morning apple/pumpkin picking, and end the afternoon sipping cider at Angry Orchard in Walden NY. If we had time we would spend a day visiting shops in the village of Montgomery and also exploring the main strip of Beacon. And truthfully, I’d probably still feel like we ran out of time and be able to fill another entire week next year!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thank you to my biggest fan Erik—if it wasn’t for your love and support I probably wouldn’t have picked my camera back up again and found such success!

Thank you to my BEST friends who have helped me and supported me tremendously along the way—Jaimie, Christina, Allie, & Marissa. I can’t express how grateful I am for the support each one of you have demonstrated.
