We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabrielle, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from New Jersey. My parents gave me the best childhood they possibly could, I was very lucky to have such cool parents, Growing up in the 90s in a lower middle class family,
And I was fortunate enough to have everything I ever needed and wanted. I danced competitively from age 3-15. My parents were entrepreneurs for my entire child hood, but divorced when I was 12, which was a very pivotal moment of my childhood. I had to grow up quickly, and the course of my life changed. In my teens I had a very temultuous relationship with my parents and stepdad, Being so young and going through family changes was hard. I dealt with depression and anxiety as a young girl, and that followed me through my teens and 20s. I went to art school in Fort Lauderdale and graduated with a bachelors degree in 2012, my parents have always been my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. I also have a sister who is 5 years younger than me, her and I are pretty close and we can relate to eachother since we have been through all of it together.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My yoga classes are more of an emotional experience. It’s a place where I thread everything I’ve learned in yoga training, as well as over 7 years of therapy. I am extremely knowledgeable in energetics, emotional regulation, trauma healing, and nervous system healing. My class is so much more than just a yoga class, it’s an opportunity to release trauma, stuck heavy energy, memories, and move towards a new version of ourselves. It’s like a therapy session on your mat. Music is a huge part
Of my classes because i curate playlists based on emotional energy, physical movements, and how music can assist
In the release of heavy emotions through the practice of yoga. The themes I talk about, the rhythm, it’s truly a safe space for people to come and let it all out, cry, scream, and heal. The pain, the hurt, the stress, the overwhelm, the chaos that life throws at us. Yoga is the way to smooth out our energy, and reset ourselves. People cry in my class, people really release a lot of heavy energy. I love the community that we have at equinox, they are amazing dedicated people and it’s always such incredible energy that they bring to the class. The community facilitates so much healing for one another. I’ve been through a lot in my life. Abusive relationships, drug and alcohol abuse, family trauma, depression and anxiety. I use everything I’ve been through in my life as fuel to become a better yoga teacher and to teach the best classes I can possibly teach and create a safe haven to heal and truly find peace

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, since I am more on a sober journey now, it would be a lot of beach,
Outdoor walks, shopping, the spa. I love a good spa day, massages, sauna, and all sorts of healing treatments like accupuncture. I also love sound baths, sound healings, cacao ceremonies. I love the standard spa, they have an incredible sauna and cold therapy room as well. I’m pretty basic when it comes to going out to eat, I love cooking at home, getting all the amazing stuff from Whole Foods. Or I would take them to live life cafe or some kind of healthy spot that has everything, not just vegan or vegetarian. I am open to eating pretty much anything as long as it’s healthy, since I have auto immune disease, I like to fuel my body with clean foods. Lava bars are also really fun, it’s a way to get a bar experience without the alcohol. Lava and kratom bars have become pretty popular in miami, some have live music, and it’s a great vibe

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well first off, my mom, dad,
Sister and grandmom baselice and uncle Lou have always been my greatest supporters. They have helped me through my mental health struggles, and they have seen me thrive and shine as I moved through college, moving to Los Angeles as a 22 year old, and then became a yoga teacher when I was 24. I also have to shout out and thank the teachers and mentors who taught me everything I know about teaching yoga. When I moved to Los Angeles, I didn’t know anyone really, other than my closest cousin Samantha, who is more like a sister to me. In 2013 I found core power yoga in Hollywood, on Hollywood blvd, and I helped them open that studio. I started as a volunteer, to help clean the studios. And as a trade I got free yoga. That studio was my safe haven. It was my home away from home. I spent hours there every day. It was the highlight of my day, to get off work, and head to hot yoga, where I truly felt my emotional turmoil be able to calm and soothe. There was a group of teachers there who I looked to as my mentors. I would take sometimes 2-3 classes a day. It was my safe space. I learned from some of the best the instructors in the world in my opinion. And to this day, without them, I wouldn’t be the teacher I’ve become. I cried in their classes, I got amazing life advice from them, and I felt like they took me under their wing, because I was sort of a lost soul living in LA alone. They truly helped shape me into the teacher I am today
