We had the good fortune of connecting with Gail Hulnick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gail, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Never give up! There are times when you have to accept that an obstacle is slowing you down or requiring you to adjust your plans, but if something gets in your way, you try to go around it. I’ve also had phases where I needed to rest or to find out more information before continuing, but that’s not the same as ‘giving up’.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Eight years ago, I plunged into writing, photography, publishing, and producing podcasts after decades of giving priority to journalism and then to mothering. I went back to school for an MFA (where learning new technologies in addition to the skills had me feeing like I’d jumped out of a plane without a parachute!) Since then, I’ve written and published six novels, a collection of short stories, five travel photography books, and several nonfiction books. My publishing program for this year is double the pace of previous years. I’ve also added The Brainwave Podcast to my schedule; it’s a weekly show where I interview artists, authors, filmmakers, architects, and other professional creators about their work and their inspiration, looking for the common experiences and insights that cross over from one art to another.
I think we all have so much to learn from one another, regardless of our niche, our age, or our heritage, and the things I make are intended to express that.
I am inspired by nature and living in Florida has me sparking with new ideas every day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Road trip! S0uth Florida is a road traveler’s paradise. We would start in Miami, and see the Design district, the waterfront, and South Beach. On Day Two (or maybe Three or Four — Miami can be distracting!)– hop in the convertible and head out on U.S. 1 toward the Keys. We’d stop at the Seven Mile Bridge and take a walk (or a bike ride, if we were organized enough to bring them along!) checking out the section of the old bridge that’s been recently revitalized. Lunch at the Seven Mile Grill in Marathon, to see if the pirate is still holding down his end of the bar.
We’d need a couple of days (at least!) in Key West, where we would stroll along Duval Street, get photos at the southernmost point of the continental U.S., tour Ernest Hemingway’s former home, and gather to applaud the sunset.
On the way back, we’d stop in Key Largo for some snorkeling.
Driving north toward Miami, we’d turn left on Alligator Alley and go through the Everglades. After some hiking and wildlife spotting, we’d finish the week in Naples, go shopping for something sophisticated on Fifth Avenue South, and finish the week watching the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am able to send my books and my podcast out into the world because of the encouragement and brilliance of my husband, David Stone, and his organization, I-fearless.
