We had the good fortune of connecting with Gen.wav and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi gen.wav, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a Producer and Software Engineer I always wanted to be able to contribute to other artists projects as well as working on my own. As an artist with many mediums it took me a while to be able to narrow down what I really wanted to do. After 4 years of Professional experience coding and 6 years of releasing music as an Artist, I decided to start my own Production Agency, Enigma Labs.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Singer-Songwriter, Producer, Multi-Instrumentalist and Engineer. Being a Trans Latino in the Music Industry has not been easy, but building my own business and my own community has been a great motivator and I see it as an essential part of any artists career, from everything that I’ve learned. It’s taken trial and error to get to where I am as a producer, songwriter, and engineer- and a lot of self study of course. Education is very important especially when it comes to business. Every artist must learn about the business because it’s inherent to the industry, and now tech is a huge part of it too. It has not been easy by any means and I believe it will continue to get harder as I advance because that is the nature of life, we will encounter “bigger” figures in bigger rooms as time goes on and that comes with the good and the bad. I overcame the challenges by persevering and believing in my art and my product. Lessons learned along the way are to have time management and a schedule with deadlines in music and to learn as much along the way as possible. As a Software Engineer, we were taught how to code, not one specific language, we know that Technology is always going to evolve at an exponential rate(Moore’s Law), so we constantly have to pick up new languages and frameworks and I apply the same philosophy to Music and Audio Engineering. I want people to know that there are good people out there in the music industry that want to see other artists and producers win, everyone is not out to scam you and to learn the business as much as possible! We all need to eat so we can all win and that starts with education! Enigma Labs is an LGBT friendly Audio Visual Agency offering Music Production, Audio Engineering, Websites and Visuals.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
KHR!S João, my co-producer and main collaborator. He is not only an Artist but also a Music Producer and Videographer and helps me a lot behind the scenes with Enigma.
