We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerardo Cabanillas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gerardo, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
We want to revalidate the old adult world. During the covid pandemic I saw my patients sucumbing against this devastating disease regardless our extremely hard and compassionate work. The elderly were the ones who suffered the most and we helped them through our social networks and media. Our society is inmerse in beauty, techology, events, sports, travels, etc. I am a Geriatritiain, a doctor who specializes in old adults or senior patients. We have put this population aside, and we do not consider that if we are lucky enough, we may get to this age sooner that expected. In our social media we teach about certain topics to protect the seniors and to put them back into a well-respected position in the society. We talk about healthy aging, common disease in the elderly, we share stories, pictures, fun moments and tips to deal with the aging process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up on an average income family, my parents worked very hard to put me in a very good school in Lima, Peru. But I was not a great student, most likey a hyperactive kid with learning difficulties. I failed and repeated 1 year in high school. Hard times. I was only good for sports at that time. However they kept supporting me and I started studying very hard. I was accepted in the medicine school and during my career I had a retinal detachment, ended up having surgeries ans this was a setback on my career. I kept going and could finish Medicine. Then, I decided to take the tremendously difficult path to become a doctor in the US. Long story short… I finished Internal Medicine in New York, I have done a fellowship in MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and recently finished my last specialty in Geriatrics Medicine in the University of Miami. Not bad for a middle income hyperactive student who was only good in sports.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Coconut Grove Miracle Miles
Doral mall
Aventura mall
Pemborke mall

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my parents Gladys and Julio, who are in Peru. They workd hard to give me the opportunity to become a doctor in Peru and supported me tremendously during my way to become a doctor and specialist in the US.
