We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerardo Escudero Samara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gerardo, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
This is a really hard topic for me to talk about. It touches tremendously my pain points.

Since I was born, I moved to other countries every 2-3 years because of my father´s job back then. So, I was used to leave behind: friends, culture, language, traditions, relationships, home. This is something I want to talk about even though it is very difficult for me because it shaped my personality and helped me become who I am. Although it was harsh, I have developed core attributes and skills like tenacity, the agility to adapt over time to radical changes, to endure hard times, and be resilient.

To give you some context, my mother is PalestinIan-Nicaraguan, my dad is Mexican, my little brothers are Bolivian and the other one Salvadorian, and my dog, Benji, was Costarican. And me? There are some theories, but my answer would be: ‘’No soy de aquí, ni soy de allá’’ that’s for sure.

People could think that I am ‘’desapegao’’ or detached, but the reality is that I miss and feel everything and everyone I have left behind, everyday of my life. Like my first best friend, Luis Fernando, in Bolivia, I named my brother after him.

This is the life I proyected after I watched Star Wars when I was 7 years old and decided that if Luke or Han Solo could fly into space, so could I. I made a promise to myself, that I would be the living proof that dreams come true and help others to achieve their most wildest dreams as well.

Only in the last 5 years I have taken 49 flights, 100% of them were for business and awards purposes only. This lifestyle has prevented me to cultivate strong relationships, specially love ones. Nevertheless, a year ago I met my wonderful girlirlfriend Bettina that supports me all the way even though it is hard for her sometimes.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have failed over and over in my life, but I have never gave up and I developed a Fail-Forward Mentality. And I am proud to say that I have 4 Masters` Degrees, I have published 16 books, and I have been globally awarded by Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, U.S. Department of State, International Franchise Association, Cambridge University, Entrepreneurs Organization, Youth Opportunities, Startup Lisboa, Università di Trieste, TED, World Literacy Foundation, Vigor Awards, Entrepreneurs Organization, ISDC, UGM.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
