We had the good fortune of connecting with Gernyd Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gernyd, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks can help you to discover new things about yourself and new interests as well. I think that as social beings we have to put ourselves in risky situations in order to develop and grow more in an introspective way. Of course, you have to choose wisely the risk you are going to take because every action has consequences. In my personal life risks take the role of evolution, challenge, and change. In my career I would say that if I did not took the risks I would not be able to be doing this.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a drum and bass DJ I have been playing for 1 or 2 years now. It has been kind of challenging considering that I am a woman in this scene playing this specific genre. There are few of us and even though it has been hard I do this with the hope that one day there will be more women playing drum and bass or other genres. Also I am currently a Biology major at the Universidad de Puerto Rico and I also work part time while I finish studying. First I got to say, being a student, DJ, and working can be pretty hard and draining. You feel like you barely have time for family, friends and hobbies. I would say these things are important because they are what make life beautiful and soulful. It was not easy managing my time but I overcame this challenge by being organized, patient and consistent. Throughout this path I learned that sometimes we are to focused on the final result but we are not really enjoying the journey. The journey plays a huge part in the accomplishment so I think we should take our time learn from it and enjoy it. Finally, I would like to say that don’t be too hard on yourself, things are coming your way if you are making your moves just have patience. We cannot keep living fast, we must try living one day at a time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting I would definitely take her to Culebra or any other beach. We would also go visit El Yunque and other river spots that I know of. After we would go to grab a drink at any place we find near and then go to the skatepark to roller skate in Barceloneta, Ponce, Gurabo or just the nearest one depending the area we are in. Finally if there are any interesting events to see we would most likely go to Santurce, Rio Piedras or Old San Juan. In Puerto Rico the most fun and interesting places to visit are the beaches and nature spots. They are beautiful and you always have the best time exploring them and connecting with nature.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my friends, partner and family for supporting me even when I did not have the courage to do this. Also massive shoutout and special thanks to Back & Forward Records for believing in me and for giving me this opportunity to work with them.
