We had the good fortune of connecting with Guy Michel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Guy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always had an euntrepreunurial mindset so it was inevitable for me to start my own business. I studied music education but I never saw myself being in the public school system. I wanted to dictate my own path

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My main focus as a cellist is to provide the best possible experience. Even though I’m classically trained, I don’t just play classical. I’m able to improvise to many different genres. I started my solo career in 2008 and that journey has been very tough but extremely rewarding. My instrument is viewed as a “classical” instrument and most people still see it as a background instrument. I wanted to break that stereotype, hence the reason why I decided to pursue a solo career. Fast forward to now, it’s still surreal that people are booking me one year in advance and able to travel the world with my cello

I want the next generation to understand that my instrumental is not a “classical” instrument and there’s a lot more to learning it than just classical music and orchestra

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m mostly a home body but when I get out of the house, I like all you can eat places. I go to Santos once a month for their unlimited sushi. I’d visit the Arsht Center because they always have different kinds of events.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents for all their sacrifice and for also introducing me to music. Karl Michel, my older brother for helping me get myself together during a time where I was somewhat confused about my path. My original cello teacher Dickens Princivil for teaching me to play my instrument instead of just focusing on notes. Last my not least, my wife Cynthia for always being supportive and being a team player.
