We had the good fortune of connecting with Hanna Gotz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hanna, how do you think about risk?
I used to be conservative about taking risks. Always calculated. There had to be a thought-out plan before ever taking the jump. In recent years, I’ve realized that taking risks means you are capturing life by the reins and steering, with everything you have, in the direction you dream of.
Starting my own small business was a risk, yes, but it was nothing compared to the everyday challenges that you come across as an entrepreneur and a creative. I firmly believe that the only way to grow is by finding ways to push your own boundaries and to do this, you have to have faith in yourself.
In retrospect, the times I have been more cautious have not been successful, while the times I have taken risks have always been for the best.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is fashion. I currently design bridal wear for my own line Hanna Gotz Studio and resort wear for Aquavita. Both are Miami based and I am able to work out of my design studio in Edgewater. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I love every day.
I went to university for fashion design, and immediately began working in the fashion industry right after. For about 8 years, I was able to gain experience in different areas from sourcing, production and merchandising to wholesale sales and buying. From small business to large global corporations. I had wonderful experiences and learned so much! But, I always knew in the back of my mind that something was missing.
I finally decided it was time to take the risk and go back to designing. I’m ultimately a creative person and am happiest when I get to sketch, play with fabrics and see my designs come to life. What brings me the most joy is seeing women in pieces I’ve designed. It’s the best decision I ever made.
Of course, there are challenges every single day. As an entrepreneur, it gets difficult and most of the time I’m figuring things out as I go. As a designer, I can get caught up in sales numbers and customer demands. I’ve found that surrounding myself with the right support group is essential. Shoulders to lean on and minds to consult. Even more-so, I surround myself with women who bring me so much inspiration.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am originally from the Dominican Republic and so obviously, a lover of everything beach and sun. Soho House in Miami Beach is one of my favorite places to spend the day.
I’m also a huge foodie and am so excited for all of the new restaurants that are opening here. My all time favorite restaurant is Mandolin Aegean Bistro. For the most spectacular desserts and cakes, Casa Gioia.
For some movement, yoga at Ahana Yoga in the Miami Design District or a walk over the Venetian Causeway.
The Miami scene keeps getting better by the minute as so many people from all of the world move here. I make it a point to try the new places that open up!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first bridal collection that recently launched is one big homage to the remarkable women who have shown me support and love throughout my journey as a designer and now an entrepreneur. Every piece in the collection is named after one of them. Without these women, I wouldn’t have the fortitude to keep pushing forward. They are my mother, sister, family and friends. A huge shoutout of heartfelt thanks to the brides and women who have worn pieces I have designed throughout the years.
Women have always been an inspiration to me. I love what I do because I have the opportunity to meet and spend time with incredible women every day.
