Meet Hugo Vasquez | Graphic Designer, Craftsman and Professor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugo Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hugo, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve never seen myself as an enterpreneur or a person who can run a business but I’ve always wanted “to do things”, I’ve wanted to create and to show to people the beauty of handmade stuff. That was the start of a carreer as a freelancer but also the begining of my little craft business. I want everybody think about themself as a creative being.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started painting as a child. I’ve always enjoyed drawing, so my parents took me to an academy in Medellin called Instituto de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Institute), there I learned the principles of art, craft and color. Then I studied Graphic Design as a degree and work as a magazine designer in a local newspaper. In 2019, I wrote and published my first poetry book with a small publisher. But my real start was in the pandemic, I quit my job and began to do ruber stamps that I sold to local bussiness. I practiced with diferent techniques and participated in some books as an illustrator.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I consider myself a not-so-fun guy but here are my favorite plans to do in Medellín: I´ll start with a trip to “La comadreja” a beautiful country house with delicious food and a very aromatic beer made inhouse. Then, I’ll take my friend to my three top museums in the city: the Museo de Antioquia, the Modern Art Museum (MAMM), the Biblioteca Pública Piloto with their “chamber of wonders” museum of photography; and last, the Explora Park, an interactive museum. I would take them to my favorite bookshops, Antimateria, Exlibris Coffee, where we can eat or take some drinks in the Carlos E park (a bohemian place with good music and cultural activities), and El Acontista, a library that has a restaurant with a very good “frijoles” plate.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to recognize the loving care of my parents. And the support of my wife, Sara Isabel.
