We had the good fortune of connecting with Ian VonderHaff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ian, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my art has been the people. The people who have supported me, the people who have encouraged me, and the people who have been honest with me. Some of the most important milestones in my artistic career have been the result of people advocating for me on my behalf. People do not forget when you support their goals and ventures and will reciprocate the support later down the line.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an oil painter who focuses on combining the sophistication of mythological characters with the opulence of modern-day high-end fashion. We have the tendency to judge a book by its cover. Stories from mythology were written with deep complexity. Fashion items today are made with the same complexity. There is a story behind each piece, an image they create, a cover to give each book. I have carefully chosen jewelry and clothing that further enhances the emotion and experiences of each character. I am most excited to see how my skills develop over time. My artistic skills are where they are today due to countless hours of learning, practicing, and reflecting. The most important advice I have is to stay consistent, there is no such reality as “something for nothing.” The rest will follow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Miami. There is so much to do and see here. I would bring anyone visiting Miami to South Beach for the feeling of “vacation” and nightlife, Wynwood for Miami’s artistic side, and Brickell for the culinary experience. KYU to eat, Key Biscayne for a relaxing beach, and a day on the water are all a must when coming to Miami!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In terms of personal growth, the book Think & Grow Rich has taught me invaluable lessons on persistence, self-control, and faith. My family, my partner, and every friend/colleague/fan who has spoken highly about myself or my art has helped me get to where I am today.
